Workshop Note
All I did was use tone mapping in Paintshop Pro. I won't got into a lot of detail, but it is similar to HDR and helps compensate for the limited dynamic range of the camera's sensor (or other medium). More can be learned here:

There are one or two TL forum threads that deal with contrast/tones/dynamic range that you may wish to read. Very informative.
