Canyon Paradise 1 (14)

A languid pool of cool, crystal-clear water reflects canyon walls of Navajo sandstone, a welcome oasis in a desert of bare rock. This wilderness paradise is not quite as perfect as it appears, however. In order to reach this viewpoint from which the scene appears to best advantage (given my limited lens selection), I had to carefully pick my way through thick vegetation interspersed with poison oak, which grows profusely on the sandy banks.

I could tell you the exact location of this pool, but then I would have to kill you! ;->

Repost Note: since first posting this image, my neg scanning skills have greatly improved, allowing me to correct the overblown highlights in the clouds while improving (IMO) the luminosity of the shaded areas. This is a "straight" scan: no burning, dodging, or other localized corrections applied! For comparison, click "Original Version" at left.

Luminosity Masking

At the suggestion of rewshearer I created a version of this image with more contrast and detail in the shadowed portion. I used a technique called luminosity masking: creating a b&w mask, then wand-lightening to selectively and simultaneously increase brightness and contrast.
