I have tried the HDR thing with Photoshop and for some reason I get no real results from it. I figured it doesn't work on RAW images or I am messing up the processing somewhere. Usually I just use DxO to lighten the shadows, it does a pretty good job - but like you say you have to be subtle with it. I was lucky with this photo because the bottom half was very dark. When I inched up the shadow exposure I noticed how it looked like an antique post card and kicked it up just enough to keep that look.
