Use the manual settings to over ride auto. Instead of say f5.6 at 1/200 second, use a bigger aperture, & longer exposure time eg f16 at 1/60th second. F11 up will give star patterns, too. A tripod is a must. Press the shutter very gently or use a cable release. If it's windy, hang your bag in the middle to stabilise it. Otherwise, improvise with whatever is handy, a fence, a post, a tree & coins to prop up one side of the camera to remove tilt. Take a small torch if you don't know where all your camera settings are in the dark.
