Open-Mouthed Australian Bird

ORDER: Struthioniformes
FAMILY: Casuariidae
GENUS: Dromaius
SPECIES: novaehollandiae

Don’t you just love him? I found this big mouthed Australian Emu at the Auckland Zoo last week and the fellow decided to yawn as I was talking to him!

The Emu is Australia's tallest native bird, reaching 1.6-1.9m when standing erect. It weighs 30-45kg.

Adult Emus are covered with shaggy grey-brown feathers except for the neck and head, which are largely naked and bluish-black. The wings are greatly reduced, but the legs are long and powerful. Each foot has three forward-facing toes and no hind toe.

The Emu is found only in Australia. It lives throughout most of the continent, ranging from coastal regions to high in the Snowy Mountains. The main habitats are sclerophyll forest and savanna woodland. These birds are rarely found in rainforest or very arid areas. Emus were once found in Tasmania, but were exterminated soon after Europeans arrived. Two dwarf species of emus that lived on Kangaroo Island and King Island also became extinct.

This is for you David / Refugee, since they are no longer in Tasmania, I thought you might like him...

Hi Janice

Woweee, look at the gullet on that. Amazing picture you have here. Looks like one of those bad hair days to me. Thnx for the share and thnx for the smile on this one. Well done.

Very well captured. He's not the prettiest I've seen but I love the hairdo and that mouth.

Hi Janice,
I love your birds! I find them hilarious, and you photograph them so well capturing all the characteristics... good as well as the not so pleasant ones! For your feathered friends that is... do they get some financial compensation for walking around looking like that? Maybe not so good publicity for New Zealand hairdressers???
Regards, and a Happy New Year from Norway...
Pablo -

This is some ugly fella. But let's not let that fact interfere with the enjoyment of a fun, if shocking, offering from you.
I shall place this one in my passport, as the immigration people NEVER check.
Good fun - and fairly crisp too.

COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL SHOT Janice!!! :D... I LOVE HIM TOO... :D... HE is a Cutie... :D... His hair!!! IS THAT MY HAIR?!!! LOL!!! :D... This is the first time I have seen one... Will not miss when I visit Ur place.. :D.. Right shot taken with perfect timing ... :D LOVE HIM!!! :D

Hi Janice

Lol! I like the shallow dof & superb sharpnes sof the emu & the wild 'hair' & open mouth. Good work!

Thanks for a hearty laugh early into the New Year. This guy is so funny...and so is his hair do...The picture is sharp with good clarity and colours. Nice workJanice. Wishing you a very Happy new Year.

Very unusual to find any Australian with a big mouth Janice! Congrats on this nice capture.

Is he is having fun or just angry?
Fantastic start of the new year. Funny and good

Rare....Amazing potrait.
Too good. The POV and DOF are really good.
Congrats ,

I was so tempted to say something about Australians but after they beat South Africa in the last cricket test I have to keep my mouth shut!
Your timing was perfect!

A great photo.
The POV and DOF are really good.
ana :)

Perfect Janice !
Thank heavens its not a self portrait *_*
Well done and happy New Year hugs and our love from Montreal to you and family !!!
Yolanda Mandy-Mat Alicia and John

This has to be the ugliest bird I have ever seen!
The tech aspects of the picture are great. The composition makes me feel like he's about ready to chomp down on your camera. The texture of his "hair"(?) is great. The Depth is good and I love the blurred background!
We have Emu's in the US but I'm SURE they aren't native to our land. Local exotic petting zoo's have them. I'm not sure I'd want to pet one though....heheh.
Anyway, This photo is a great way to start the new year as most people will wake up, and be happy that they aren't looking into a mirror! Those with hangovers won't really be sure though...
Great job Janice, I love it!!!
Your USA friend,

LOL Very well seen! Like it was crying out loud something! Was it angry? Photo nicely composed, with strange colours of the bid - is it really it's natural colour?! tfs

Happy New Year!

you certainly don't want to meet up with up in a dark alley at midnight!!!!!!!!!!!

What perfect timing Janice! A hilarious shot indeed. I have included this one in my funny theme folder. God's best and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Tim :o)

Lol Janice I have seen more than enough of the emu. In periods of drought they move into farming country on flocks of up to 3,000. Some farmers are given permits to cull them to avid too much stock damage. Other farmers actually breed them as a sideline. Emu oil is used in all sorts of cosmetics and linaments and believe it or not the meat is quite palatable, low in cholesterol.
Wonderful shot, clear crisp and I love the topnot, maybe another entry for the bad hair day :)

What a pity about that horrible background, even blurred as it is... the subject is great by itself, of course. What a pose have you captured, Janice. Incredible.

Ha Janice,

It's a real beauty this funny bird. How ugly can you be.

Excellent photo Janice, Really fantastic moment. Good focus and colour too. Shane Warne?
I did a quick workshop to get rid of the fence. The emu is now more prominent.

Hi Janice, cute photo :D is this what we call a bad hair day? lol! Or a hang over after New Year's celebrations? ;) Very well done and funny.

I wish you the very best for 2006 and many many more beautiful photos :)

This picture is certainly the most funny of the site! I'm still laughing! Thank you so much for this little gift!

Is that bird burping? :) Nice capture here. I like the DOF you achieved..I'm not a fan of the colored frame though I think it detracts a bit from the picture.

Very funny picture. It looks like someone who drank to much the day before.

hahaha! Fantastic!

This is a good one, full of life. Well composed.

This would be a dangerous scene in wildlife but in the zoo it's comical.
Great shot

Ha, a nice one ! Great moment captured, I like it !!!

Increiblemente buena !

Hi,Janice!Nice way to make my day smiling:)
