Great crested grebe
|[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note|
|I was walking along the canal where we lived and could not help to spot this beauty. The Great crested grebe, or in Latin, Podiceps cristatus. They have a lovely and eloborate mating dance. Her partner was out on the canal, too far away to get a decent picture.
I feel a bit upset though, as due to allowing us humans to do social distancing the cut the verger by the canal. This has made their nest totally exposed. There is only about 50 cm of 'shortish' grass by the nest now. The most upsetting part is that this is breeding season and according to the LAW you are not allowed to upset or disturb breeding birds nor disturb their nest. Still, they cit the vergers in the middle of the breeding season. Normally this would be ok as much more is left on the vergers but this year they cut more than normal so that we humans would have an additional path to walk on. Again, we are intruding on nature. So, I did. not stop long. I only took a very few pictures from quite a distance. One of the reasons being I am making a complaint to our local council
