Wedding Scene-"The Sound of Music"
 |
|
[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
With a very busy theater schedule, I finally am able to post a production image from my latest directing effort of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, “The Sound of Music” that ran in May 2013.
The scene depicted here is the wedding scene, with Maria and girls having walked down the center aisle of the theater up onto the stage, meeting the Captain, Max, the bishop, and the boys on stage, plus 36 “nuns” walk into the house (seating area) from each side with candles finally singing, “How to You Solve a Problem Like Maria?” during the ceremony.
This is a “production” image that is not posed, but shot as the musical play is in progress during our rehearsal with the goal to attempt to capture what the audience will seeing.
Shot under existing stage lighting and candlelight (I did the stage lighting design), which here consisted of a mix of color gelled tungsten lighting, using especially strong side and high lighting, also backlighting the stained glass window. The scenic backdrop was lit in mostly blue border lighting from above with the stage lighting adding the warming color toward the bottom of the scene.
I shot over 700 RAW images using two Canon 5D MK IIs, both tripod-mounted about 40-feet (12m) from the stage in the aisle of the house. On one I used my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens, and the other with my 24-105mm f/4L IS lens.
I have shot these at 1600 ISO, and the camera was set for tungsten lighting and I used Tv (Shutter Priority) mode making on-the-fly exposure adjustments using the exposure shift to adjust aperture.
PP in PS5 RAW and PS, did only some very basic adjustments without altering the look of the stage image. Cropped to a wide view (not quite panoramic), and ran the image through NIK Define (noise reduction) and NIK Sharpener.
Being also a theatrical lighting designer, stage lighting is not always ideal for photography, because the human eye is a much better camera and stage lighting is done for people not cameras. I shot these while overseeing the final aspects of the production (on a headset for cues for lighting, sound, stage etc.)

What a wonderful mood you have captured in this scene, dear Larry!
Clarity and sharpness are well done, and colors are natural.
Good contrasts exist within the picture.
Nice work!
