Taken in a local street a few weeks ago using a circular polarizing filter.

If asked to name a single tree that's helped shape the character of Brisbane, it would be the magnificent poinciana Delonix regia. In years gone by it was traditionally planted as a street tree and now enhances a lot of the city’s older suburbs.

The poinciana is native to Madagascar, and in Brisbane the bright orange flowers herald the coming of summer. They also signal the start of the storm season.

They can grow up to 10 metres, but mostly only reach between 3 to 5 metres. However, their spreading growth habit, which can be up to 10 metres, means the poinciana is not a tree for a small yard.

It's a semi deciduous tree – shedding the old leaves in spring, but new ones follow immediately, so it's never without foliage. A word of advice though - don't plant one near a swimming pool, because when it sheds its leaves every one will get into the pool filter.

Because they're a legume, they produce attractive seed pods which look like a big bean. Like all legumes, they need a reasonably high soil pH of between 6.5 and 7, especially at establishment stage. Because it’s grown from seed, it can take 10 years or more to flower. Apply dolomite in autumn, and six weeks later some phosphatic fertiliser, which usually encourages a shy poinciana to produce flowers.

Hi Chris.

Such a colourful display of a very attractive plant, your sky tones aid its appeal. Neat clouds too.

Beautiful! Awesome use of the sky as a background! Love the color contrast between the red flowers and the blue sky. Good dof with sharp details. Very well done, tfs.

Beautiful vibrant colours and well composed. You have done well not to have blown the sky, which adds much to the scene.

Hi Chris, great backdrop for these beautiful blooms. The sunshine is highlighting all the vivid colours.
Excellent DoF.
Tfs, regards Jean.

Bom dia,
Summer is undoubtedly time of intense reds and greens.
Pretty the contrast of these highkey colors against the polarized sky.
Beautiful composition, worthy of Chris Jules.
Um abraço.

You have captured beautiful colours here Chris, certainly enhanced by the cpl filter. I like the pov and the sunlight glowing on the branches and red flowers has produced a magical quality against the blue sky.

Ciao Chris, lovely composition with beautiful flowers on fantastic sky, excellent clarity, splendid light and wonderful natural colors, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Hi Chris,

The leaves are framing well the flowers. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the poinciana. The good luminosity is giving nice tints to the colors. Have a nice day.

Hello Chris :)

These flowers look on the background of the blue sky wonderfully and white clouds.
The splendid, beautiful composition in perfect light and pretty, contrasting colours.
The very showy shot executed perfectly, I like him.

Best wishes.
