Sagrantino di Montefalco

Sagrantino di Montefalco are Italian wines made with 100% Sagrantino grapes in the Province of Perugia, although not necessarily in the comune of Montefalco. The wines include Montefalco Sagrantino secco, a dry DOCG red wine and Montefalco Sagrantino passito, a sweet DOCG red wine.
For a long time, the Sagrantino grape variety was only used for Montefalco Sagrantino passito or to fortify mixed wines. In recent years, producers such as Arnaldo Caprai have started to use it unblended.
Under Italian law, the term "Montefalco Sagrantino Secco" defines a wine obtained exclusively from Sagrantino grapes, produced exclusively in the Province of Perugia, in the Umbria region of central Italy (although not necessarily in the comune of Montefalco). The word "secco" in the name is Italian for "dry". The wine is aged for 30 months, of which at least 12 months must be in oak barrels. The wine is a DOCG, the highest-ranking category of Italian wine denominations. The Montefalco Sagrantino secco has excellent storage characteristics.

Il Montefalco Sagrantino o Sagrantino di Montefalco è un vino DOCG la cui produzione è consentita solo nei comuni di Montefalco per intero, e parte di quelli di Bevagna, Gualdo Cattaneo, Castel Ritaldi e Giano dell'Umbria in provincia di Perugia. Il disciplinare prevede la produzione di Sagrantino di Montefalco secco e passito.
Risale al XVI secolo il primo documento ufficiale che cita il nome del vitigno, che si trova nell'archivio notarile della città di Assisi. Secondo alcuni l’uva era coltivata dai frati francescani che ne ricavavano un passito destinato ai riti religiosi, da cui il nome Sagrantino. Riguardo all'origine del vitigno però, questo potrebbe anche essere il frutto di una selezione da cloni locali. Ad ogni modo, sin dalla prima metà del Trecento gli statuti comunali della zona includevano leggi e disposizioni a tutela del vino e della vite. Successivamente, dall'anno 1540, è un'ordinanza comunale a stabilire ufficialmente la data d'inizio della vendemmia a Montefalco: questa ricorrenza è perpetuata ancora oggi grazie alla Confraternita del Sagrantino, che ogni settembre raduna in piazza paesani e forestieri per la cerimonia di inaugurazione ufficiale della vendemmia e per la lettura della storica ordinanza. Altro personaggio curioso nella storia del Sagrantino di Montefalco è il cardinale Boncompagni, legato di Perugia, che nel 1622 promosse un severo inasprimento delle sanzioni per chi fosse stato colto nell'atto di tagliare una pianta d'uva: la pena massima poteva essere addirittura la forca. Ad inizio Ottocento, lo storico Serafino Calindri cita l'area intorno a Montefalco come zona di produzione di alcuni dei migliori vini dello Stato Pontificio nel suo "Saggio geografico, storico, statistico del territorio Pontificio". Nei decenni successivi, pur essendo ben riconosciuta la qualità del vino di Montefalco in tutta la regione, il vitigno rischia la scomparsa a causa di guerre e ricostruzioni. Negli anni Sessanta del Novecento, grazie all'operato di alcuni abili e lungimiranti vignaioli, il Sagrantino torna ad essere il vitigno principe dell'area di Montefalco e progressivamente di tutta la regione Umbria. Ottiene il riconoscimento della DOC nel 1979 - poi divenuta DOCG nel 1992 - e circoscrivendo un suo consorzio di tutela già dal 1981.
L'uvaggio è assolutamente monovarietale, quindi 100% Sagrantino, per una resa massima d'uva di 80 ql/ha, e una resa massima dell'uva in vino al 65%. Il coefficiente di acidità minima deve essere pari 5,0 grammi per litro, e la quantità di alcol minimo non deve essere inferiore ai 13.00 gradi %. L'affinamento (elevage) è una delle caratteristiche peculiari del Sagrantino di Montefalco. In totale deve affinarsi per 30 mesi (contati dal 1 dicembre), di cui almeno 12 in legno. Per essere immesso al consumo, il Sagrantino di Montefalco (secco) deve corrispondere alle seguenti caratteristiche: alla vista deve avere un colore rosso rubino molto intenso, con possibili riflessi violacei (sempre più tendenti al granato con l’invecchiamento); all'olfatto deve avere un profumo delicato e particolare, con sentori di more; infine, deve avere un sapore asciutto e armonico. L'estratto secco netto minimo deve essere al 26 per mille. Il colore: è rosso rubino intenso, talvolta con riflessi violacei e tendente al granato con l'invecchiamento, l’odore: delicato caratteristico che ricorda quello delle more di rovo, il sapore: asciutto, armonico. Quando il vino è giovane, il tannino è in forte evidenza. Si abbina con arrosti di carni rosse, cacciagione e formaggi stagionati. Anche con piatti importanti come uno stufato di cinghiale od un arrosto di agnello.

Bonjour Sylvio,

Nice rendition. It looks like some kind of HDR or tone mapping treatment, but I may be wrong. I like the Pastel Painting effect. Very artistic. The distant POV creates a nice flat perspective that amplify the painting effect. Very nice rendition and TFS.

Like a fantasyland. The menacing clouds are in tremendous contrast to the colorful floral, parfaited landscape and the green strip of grass is the bridge that leads our eye towards it all. A very good eye on this composition and with the ultimate pove. Beaufiful!
