Castelmezzano

Castelmezzano è un comune di 873 abitanti della provincia di Potenza.
Nel 2007 il sito di viaggi americano "Budget Travel" definì Castelmezzano la migliore località del pianeta tra quelle di cui non si è mai sentito parlare, assieme a Caraiva (Brasile), Estacada (USA), Irgalem (Etiopia), Puerto Angel (Messico), la regione dello Jura (Francia), Jomsom (Nepal) e Sangkhlaburi (Thailandia) Inoltre è uno dei 196 comuni italiani ad essere preso in considerazione dal Club "I borghi più belli d'Italia", che ha incluso in questa categoria altri comuni della Basilicata come Venosa, Acerenza, Pietrapertosa e Guardia Perticara
Sorge a 900 m s.l.m. nel cuore delle Dolomiti Lucane poco distante dal Parco Naturale di Gallipoli Cognato- Piccole Dolomiti Lucane. Situato nella parte centro-orientale della provincia confina con i comuni di: Pietrapertosa (10 km), Trivigno (13 km), Albano di Lucania (17 km), Laurenzana (18 km) e Anzi (21 km). Dista 36 km da Potenza e 81 km dall'altra provincia lucana di Matera.
Le origini di Castelmezzano sono datate circa tra il VI ed il V secolo a.C., quando dei coloni greci penetrarono nella valle del Basento e fondarono un centro abitato chiamato Maudoro, cioè mondo d'oro. Nel X secolo d.C., le invasioni saracene costrinsero la popolazione locale a trovare una nuova stabilizzazione. Si narra che, durante l'esodo, un pastore chiamato Paolino scoprì un luogo adatto per trasferirsi, formato da rocce ripide dalle cui cime si potevano respingere gli invasori facendo rotolare massi di pietra.
Dopo l'occupazione longobarda, vi si insediarono i Normanni tra il XI ed il XIII secolo d.C. e vi costruirono un castello (di cui sono ancora visibili i resti delle mura e la gradinata scavata nella roccia che consentiva l’accesso al punto di vedetta più alto). Fu proprio dal nome del castello (Castrum Medianum, castello di mezzo) che ne derivò quello della cittadina, denominato così per via della sua posizione tra quelli di Pietrapertosa e di Albano). Con i Normanni, Castelmezzano visse un periodo di pace e di sviluppo, con gli Angioini conobbe un forte declino. Nel 1310, il comune venne affidato alla Diocesi di Potenza e nel 1324 a quella di Acerenza.
Con l'arrivo degli Aragonesi, tra il XIV ed il XVI secolo, numerosi proprietari terrieri ricevettero come feudo Castelmezzano, sebbene le condizioni economiche e sociali rimasero perlopiù invariate. Solamente con la nomina del barone Giovanni Antonio De Leonardis (la cui famiglia governo la cittadina dal 1580 al 1686), ci fu un certo sviluppo. Successivamente, passò per via nuziale ai De Lerma, ai quali rimase fino al nel 1805, anno in cui il feudalesimo era in estinzione nel sud Italia.
Nel XIX secolo, Castelmezzano fu toccata dal fenomeno del brigantaggio. Grazie proprio alla sua collocazione territoriale costituita da nascondigli naturali tra le rocce e vegetazioni rigogliose, fu un rifugio ideale per numerosi briganti. Alla fine del secolo, il comune subì un forte fenomeno migratorio, che spinse numerose famiglie a trasferirsi oltreoceano.

Castelmezzano is a town and comune in the province of Potenza, in the Southern Italian region of Basilicata. It is bounded by the comuni of Albano di Lucania, Anzi, Laurenzana, Pietrapertosa, Trivigno.
The origins of Castelmezzano date to approximately between the 6th and 5th centuries BC, when Greek settlers in the valley of penetrarono Basento and founded a town called Maudoro, meaning roughly the world of gold. In the 10th century AD, the Saracen invasions forced the local population to find a new location. It is said that during the exodus, a pastor called Paolino discovered a place to move, formed by rocks from the steep peaks which could repel the invaders by means of rolling stone boulders on to the invaders.
After occupation by the Lombards, the Normans settled there between the 11th and 13th century AD and built a castle (the remains of which the walls and tier of rocks allowed access to the higher lookout point are still visible). It was from the name of the castle (Castrum Medianum, roughly means Castle in the Middle) that the town derived it name, the castle so named because of its position between those of Pietrapertosa and Albano di Lucania. With the Normans, Castelmezzano experienced a period of peace and development, until the Angevins experienced a sharp decline. In 1310, the municipality was entrusted to the Diocese of Potenza (PZ) and in 1324 to that of Acerenza.
With the arrival of the Aragonese, between the 14th and 16th century, many landowners received Castelmezzano as feudo, although the economic and social conditions remained mostly unchanged. Only with the appointment of Baron Giovanni Antonio De Leonardis (whose family governerned the town from 1580 to 1686), did development take place. Subsequently, it passed by marriage to the De Lerma, who remained until 1805, when feudalism was on the verge of extinction in southern Italy.
In the 19th century, Castelmezzano was affected by brigandage. Due to its location, rich in natural hiding places among the rocks and lush vegetation, it was an ideal refuge for many bandits. At the end of the century, the town suffered a major migratory exodus, which prompted many families to move overseas.

Hello Silvio, I love the way that these old communities cling to the hillside in this way; it makes one wonder how they were built in the first place.
The time of day with the yellow lamps glowing really adds to the beauty of this shot.
