Here is another recent addition to my collection of all the lighthouses of the Great Lakes for my web site, and maybe for a gallery exhibit or book.

This is the Kenosha North Pier Lighthouse is on the east coast (west shore) of Lake Michigan, and is typical of the conical red lighthouses found on Lake Michigan. Built in 1906 to replace the still standing all brick old Kenosha Southport Lighthouse (1866), they are both located on Simmons Island. I have shot both over the years, but not since converting to digital. This day was mostly sunny, with a very strong wind from the north creating strong waves for and interesting foreground.

I the case of this image, I wanted to create a color illustration effect which tends to flatten the image creating the desired result. Shot from the beach using the 1.4x extender on the lens in RAW file format, PP began with PS RAW adjustments to the basic color image. Processed using NIK Dfine (noise reduction) and RAW Sharpener before moving into NIK Viveza, where I made overall color balance adjustments, adding structure, and some minor exposure/brightness/contrast balance for the standard image. In another Layer, I used NIK HDR to create the more artistic illustration effect (and not a traditional HDR image). Back in PS, I made a layer section of the red lighthouse tower to selectively reduce the vibrance of the red to better match the overall look I desired in the final illustration version. Made a slight crop for the final image.

The standard color version is posted in the Workshop.

Hi Larry

I have a couple of shots of the Bathurst point lighthouse I may upload one day, but in the meantime this is a nice alternative. Love the symmetry here between the 2 vertical cylinder shapes of the lighthouse at right & the beacon at left. Good pp work & tfs!

Hi Larry
wonderful seascape. captured from the right POV for a splendid composition regarding the main lighthouse and signal pole. fine PP work on colors and structure. the waves make a beautiful surface on the water. straight and sharp horizon.

Hi Larry
A beautiful example of the DOF captured with superb sharpness and details while the contrast colors plays good role in the depth.

I heard the lakes can be very rough. And, yes, this deserve to be in a book. My 2011 calendar is about lighthouses. Nicely captured with good details. Wonderful colors. Well done, tfs.

Hi Larry,
It is interesting the amount of effort you put to produce a perfect image for your lighthouse collection of the Kenosha North Pierhead Lighthouse. I like the wave movement, I like the horizon location as well as the sharp colors...Well done... Best

Love the PP work and the scene you have caught here, Larry!

Great color contrasts and nice mood are seen in this lovely image.
The movement in sea waves is so energetic and a 3-D look is felt here.
Well done!

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards,

Hi Larry,
Beautiful seascape with this lighthouse and pierhead,
Excellent details of lovely wave too,
good work and point of view.
very well done.

Lovely mood in this shot with the coloured lighthouse and beautiful sky and breaking wave. I must admit that I prefer the sharpness of your original shot even if the colours are not so pronounced.Nice work.

Hello Dear Brech

the BG is amazing looks like an oil painting and in FG the ocean wave very well frozen. excellent composition.

Hello Larry,
I like the PP work here and that you took artist's licence. A beautiful image.

Hello Larry,

I have a thing for lighhouses and this one makes my day. The POV is very good and the waves mouvement has been well captured. The light gives sharp colors and details. I must say though that my preference goes to the original image in the WS.

Best regards

Another fantastic lighthouse capture. Your color illustration effect is amazing and really makes this look like oil painting.
I love the natural colors of the water and the waves colliding against the pier.
I really like this one!

Bonjour Larry,
