Not much time to set up something for the theme - so a quick demo of how shaped filters can change the bokeh effect quite dramatically.

In the WS you can see that I've cut out a filter with the word Dubai on it, well, they're about to have 40th celebrations of the creation of the UAE so it may come in handy for some city shots.
Basically, just place said filter over the lens to change the normal effect at left to the one at right.

ISO100 at f1.4 (gotta go wide for this).

Hi David,
I like this play with filters, producing two different bokeh results from a single shot! Yes, what's wrong in experimenting? You produced a wonderful collage! Good use of the lens with f/1.4!
Nice warm lighting emitted from the candles and a nice artistic (photographically) presentation.
My best regards,

Francis Xavier

Bonjour David,

Excellent demonstration for this week Friday theme. Your choice of lens is definitively a must to achive nice bokeh and of course the maximum apereture will create the soft effect desired and will be extremely creative in portrait. The mask filter to generate more or less "subluminal" boken and is an excellent trick that I tried in the past. Cost practically nothing and can make a lot of difference in creativity. Beautifull demonstration on How To use that optical phenomenom to give distinction to our photography. Thanks for sharing.

Very educational and useful note David, well done. thanks..

Bravo et amitié

Hi David, I like the experiment with the word although i think I'm now seeing spots..Might give it a go now I have the smaller lens. Fiona

Really nice work David! It totally shows the difference that apeture and the abberation of the lens make! There is a huge difference between bokeh and blur! You showed it well here. Thanks for joining in!

You had a good and creative idea to make this demonstration of bokeh, it is useful.
And you gave me also want to try with candles, waiting to make Christmas bokeh with the Christmas tree.
The result with f 1.4 is beautiful.
Beautiful warm light atmosphere, and a good focus on the first candle.

Hi David,
good tutorial,I do prefer your image to the left & do find the other intereresting as I can see how different shaped filters, could make for some interesting Bokeh effects.TFS
Perfect for the theme.

Hi David,

This is a very good demonstration of bokeh effect with filter. You know how go further in your learning, thanks a lot to share with us.

Very very interesting presentation David , how simple and dirt cheap to achieve , you put the cut out paper/filter over the lens and bingo the result is the exemple on the right , mind you my friend the left one is very well done bokek-wise to begin with . I ought to try this out someday , thanks for sharing your experiment with us ,

Hi David

I took a similar shot years ago but I think this is better. Tighter crop, nice gradation from sharp fg to oof circles of confusion in the bg. The comparison of left & right is good too. Tfs!
