Hi Ricki,

Your More Photo Info shows you use a Canon D60.
I'm presuming it is a 60D DSLR?

Now, about your pic, again I'm presuming you shot this on an auto setting.
To isolate the seagull you should have tried the following;
Move around to get a more suitable background, eg dark trees, or sky.
Use Av (Aperture value) and set to f5.6 or wider if your lens allows.
This will soften or blur the B/G to make the seagull 'pop' out more.
Also, once you have focussed on the gull move the camera to have a less central composition.
