[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This interesting man was surfing by the Golden Gate Bridge. I asked if I could photograph him and he said yes. When people are asked and agree to being photographed the shots turn out so much better than if a photo is taken without their consent.

I usually shoot in the studio and I really enjoy creating the light that I want but an environmental portrait like this is also very satisfying. I usually keep the 24-70 lens on the camera for general use and this lens is quite good for portraits like this. I am amazed that this lens seems as sharp as my fixed lenses.

To bring the surfer out of the shot I used a shallow depth of field with the background converted to black and white using a layer mask.

YOu really do find the most interesting characters Roger. The B&W background here is great ... really makes him standout in the scene. He's nicely placed in the shot.

Hello Roger

Just goes to show, if I used the surfercize program, I would look as good as him at that age. He looks to be in excellent physical health. You captured him well and used great techniques........awesome. Now where is my surfboard!!!! nice work Roger

Hi Roger,
An interesting impression on this man's face..maybe he wants to say...I'm the Best...
Good use of available diffused lighting which is ideal for portraits.
Well done,

Francis Xavier

Hi Roger,
wow did you ever make him stand out,I like the clear details & the so natural colors you captured.I like the strenght of character you have captured, within his features. This gentleman ,has to be fit & very agile to enjoy the sport of surfboarding & you captured that ,with his stance & stature.
I was unsure whether the inclusion of the rock at his side, was a plus or a minus to the composition, did a WS for myself, tried omitting, reducing it in size, repositioning it & none of that improved on this composition,so I learned why it's there, thanks. Would you ever use centre metering on this type of scene?

Hell Roger,
This image has so much character! And imagine...someone at his age still surfing.

Hi Roger,

Great portrait, interesting subject and with context too, which I like to see. I like the idea of the B/W background.

Bonjour Roger,

Bonjour Roger
Nice portrait in outdoors, the perfect dof and sharpness at 2.8 and a bground which gives the mood.
well done, sure

The image certainly moves me emotionally, I am struck by the proud pose of this surfer, he seems to be saying "You are never too old to enjoy life".

A wonderfully captured image with excellent focus and detail, the PP on the bg works very well with this shot.

Once again, Bravo Roger.

Hi Roger, A fine beach portrait of this rather rugged looking surfer as you'd need to be to be in the water that far north! The face is full of character and you cropped this image well. TFS. Murray

I do like this photo, Roger!
For the soft cloudy ambience but more for the strong presence of the surfer! His poses so proudly.
His position on the close foreground adds a very good depth! Very well doen! Annie

Very cool shot! What a dude. His look is terrific - and the clarity and composition of your shot is terrific too.

I'm a little confused why you'd use a CP on a cloudy day?
