These cute kids remind me of the movie Juno..Their expressions are genuine and very touching. I did this shot for them because vacation is over and Kaya will be returning to her professional acting career in Los Angeles and Alex will be returning to High School in northern California. I thought it would be nice for them to have some cute pictures to remind them of each other.

Technically the shot is complicated. In order to catch these expressions I had to use burst mode and shoot four shots per second. To do that the light has to be continuous and powerful enough to capture the right depth of field and shutter speed. I have just enough light to do that but not any extra. The ISO is 320 which is as high as I really want to go and shutter speed 1/50 which is fine for still shots but pushing the limit if the subjects are changing expressions or moving. Depth of field at 5.6 will catch both subjects with the 35mm lens but might have some problems with longer lenses.

So technically this is pushing my capabilities in the studio but the shot is worth all the effort. If this shot was done with strobes it would have been either a lucky catch or required a big power pack for multiple exposures in bursts.

I have started using the 35mm lens for portraits in the studio and it is working out well.. Usually I stick with the 85 or the 50 but I am pleased with the results so far from the wide angle. The advantage of the wide lens is not only the broad range of view but the forgiving depth of field.

Good light Roger - well dealt with technically!! Odd eye position ;-)

Fun portrait, well executed!!

Alex's upward glance and Kaya's kiss indeed look sincere and genuine. Awesome lighting Roger. A very skilfully rendered portrait.

Hello Roger!

Beautiful, pleasant portrait :)
Natural colours, light, sharpness.
Pretty, interesting composition and realization.

My best wishes.

Very nice shot. The lights did a great job here, both subjects are evenly lit and there's good separation of their hair - Alex's darker hair especially - from the background, even without the use of a separate hair light. The moment is sweet - and I agree, good timing or the ability to get a whole lot of shots and choose the best are usually key to getting "the" shot.

I was initially a little confused over which arm belonged to whom, at first I thought we were seeing both Kaya's arms, but then I realised one belongs to her, and one to him ...!

Hello Roger!

It is a very beautiful shot in terms of light, sharpness, contrasts.
Very lovely and natural expression full of love. It is looking really genuine.

TFS, indeed a good tribute to both of them.
