Orthetrum coerulescens (Keeled Skimmer)

Hi friends, today I am presenting a “love wheel” position of a pair:) which I captured during my Black Sea Region trip in Çayeli (Rize province).

I wish all TL Friends and their families all the best for the coming New Year! Thanks for your warm and heartfelt friendship during the past season too.

TFL and Cheers,

Keeled Skimmer is a common, small Orthetrum of flowing water around the Mediterranean found with the similar O. brunneum (Southern Skimmer) and several other look-alikes in the far south.

It is about the size of Sympetrum striolatum with a total length of 36-45mm (Abdomen length: 23-38mm, Hind wing spans: 28-33mm). In most areas, the mature male is separated from all libellulids, except O. brunneum, by the all-pruinose abdomen and yellow pterostigma, but young males and females are often confused with Sympetrum.

O. coerulescens is characterised by its rather small size, fairly slender tapering abdomen and large pterostigmas (around 4mm long). Unlike similar species, the mature male develops little pruinosity on the thorax, and has a brown face. It thus appears two-coloured, rather than all-blue. Usually, two pale stripes on the front of the thorax are visible, but the sides are a uniform colour. Two subspecies are recognized. The southern ssp. anceps has been considered a good species, formerly often called O. ramburii, but this is unjustified as intermediate individuals occur in large areas. Seen from the side, typical ssp. coerulescens males have the anterior lamina standing nearly perpendicular to the abdominal axis. Its apex is inflated and rounded. Typical ssp. anceps has a more pointed and triangular anterior lamina, which is directed more backwards. Southern males (thus including ssp anceps) tend to be more densely and extensively pruinose and may seem totally blue.

It is normally sits on vegetation, seldom on the ground. Its flight is quite skittish, with frequent hovering, and it lands often. It can fly quite a distance from water, despite its seemingly weak flight. When it perches, the wings are held forward.

Keeled Skimmer is common around the Mediterranean, but generally local in central and northern Europe. Typical ssp. anceps is found in N Africa, Asia (to N India), Sardinia and the S Balkans. Intermediate forms predominante in Iberia, Sicily and large parts of SE Europe. Elsewhere, typical ssp. coerulescens is found, marginally entering Russia. It flights from April to November, most abundant from June to August.

It's so beautiful and a very special moment.
So sad that we live apart from each other such a long distance - it would be a great pleasure for me to make a "photo- and nature-trip" with you - special in your area, as I see you have fantastic dragons in your country, very nice foto-models.
Thanks my friend, you gave me so much joy with your postings during this year, all the best for you in 2010, greetings
Sabine - wishnugaruda

Bayram: What an excellent testimony to one of the world's greatest thinkers and poets who coined the phrase: "The female of the species is more deadlier than the male." A quote by Rudyard Kipling that has lasted forever. And so very true. GREAT wild life photograph! I'm sure you spent quite a bit of time waiting for this scene to play out till the bitter end. A+1 Excellente!
