Another one from my attempts at photographing my dogs for Christmas cards - not the easiest subject but this is 'Jet' (jet black - nothing to do with aeroplanes) and he's a 12 year old labrador and better behaved than Lucy who's just 4 and a labrador/beagle mix..

White BG with flash and a softbox to the right to illuminate the dog's face..

Still got to get my cards printed!!!!

Hi David
Jet is certainly sitting well for you - and what a good idea for your Christmas cards...
You have managed the blacks and the whites perfectly - good focus on Jet and even his hairs show up against the white
Well done

Hi David...
Beautiful dog portrait...
Beautiful light...
Regards...
Andro

Hehehe...like this Santa Dog :-) Perfect portrait excellent sharp and Lucy's pose is superb. Did you used a natural background or is this done in photoshop?
Hans

Hi David

Another nice postcard, a good studio work with perfect lighting and sharpening...
I think if the dog look through your lens, it creates more effective and dynamic view... Also adding a white frame seems not too harmonic and essential here

OMG David, how many animals do you have? :)
Great shot of Jet .. he does look a little better behaved than Lucy .. such a nice pose, and no bread required to keep him there. Really nice detail on this one.
I couldn't resist doing a little workshop just to try a narrow black inner line, just to define the white border .. what do you think?

Hello David!
Another beautiful Christmas card and another beautiful dog!
Excellent quality of the picture from all points of view!
Best regards!
Lili

I see him thinking "What's in it for me?" haha! Panting..those lights are HOT! Funny! I wonder if the effect would be more dramatic with a BLACK BG? Or even Red! You at least got him to sit still! Good job!

Hello David

Can see trhe softbox in the Jets eye, Different. I wish I had the patience for this. Awesome light management to capture the black dogs hair. Do you prefer flash, or continuous light? Nice work

Jimmy

beautiful friend,
nicely decorated and very well shot with great light and clean bvackground to bring up the black of the pet.

Hi David,
haha, it's lovely and I like this dog very much.
I know it's not easy to do that - perhaps a dog likes it more?!? - But I also tried that with my cat several years ago - she wasn't "amused".
Greetings and thanks

Nice shot with good pp work Labs have such a nice temperament Colours and definition very nice TFS
warm regards
David

technically, a very well done photo. however, i don't see any visual appeal in this one.

i think snow/christmas trees and red color make up for better choices..

just my two cents, like i said, its very sound technically.

Hi David,

I appreciate you posting this. I am a cat person and I know the joys and difficulties of photographing animals. This will indeed make a good Christmas card. Jet looks adorable with his Santa hat, lighting is good.

dear David,
a cheerful picture,
black dog and white back, red and white cap, and pink tongue and neckless, those are really joyful christmas ambience,
thank you for your wonderful shot,
Akihisa

Woof! Woof! (Translation: I'm so handsome!)

Haha I don't think I've ever seen a dog "sit" for a portrait so well - this a profile shot that most people couldn't hope for!!

The background is well done, and the light too - my only suggestion for next time would be to have the flash a little higher, generally having the light source slightly above eye level works better than having it below.

Cool shot!

HI David
Your choice of white background was perfect giving the feeling of coldness that comes with snow, and the black and red are outstanding making this a nice neat looking card.

Jet is a very nice docile subject whose snout is stating to give away his age, give him a pat for me.
