... montecristi ! For well over 100 years , Ecuador has endured the world mistakenly crediting another country ( Panama ) with its most famous export----the panama hat .To any Ecuadorian the panama hat is a toquilla-straw hat and to the connoisseur it's a Montecristi named after the most famous hat-making town of all in Ecuador , indeed it's not a panama hat !
The origin of this misnomer--surely one of the world's greatest--dates back to the 1800s when Spanish entrepreners quick to recognize the unrivalled quality of the toquilla straw began exporting them via Panama. During the 19th century workers on the Panama canal used these light and durable hats to protect themselves from the tropical sun and helped solidify the association with Panama. There goes the story, so the panama hat comes from Ecuador not from Panama !
The hats are handmade and fall into 4 categories ,graded by the density of their weaves : standard , superior , fine and superfine . Most hats we see in markets are standard or superior , the least quality . For the record , if you hold a real 'superfine ' to the light you shouldn't see a single hole, the best of them will hold water and some are so finely woven and so pliable that they can supposedly be rolled and pulled through a man's ring ! Price for the best hats can reach $500 !

Hi Carol, I love this kind of shot! I presume this was taken in a hat store. Love the natural light, and the way it falls on the table and floor, and across the hats. Great perspective also. Fantastico!
And the story .. well that's just the icing on the cake!! Very interesting. Who knew that these hats really came from Ecuador? I didn't!

It's a day for clothing displays - this is a great image! Love the POV looking down the long table. The sunlight in the otherwise darkened room is an interesting way to have these great hats illuminated for the shot. I imagine this must be the interior of a store, maybe taken on a day when it was not open for business? You show the wonderful colors and textures of the hats so well. Nice work, and informative note.
