What makes «Via della Conciliazione» (Road of the Conciliation) the most disliked avenue in Rome?

It is a relatively short street, running east/west from the Castel Sant' Angelo on the north bank of the Tiber (here swinging southwest around the historical city centre) to the magnificent Piazza S. Pietro.

And yet, less than 60 years ago — the road was constructed between 1936 and 1950 — Via della Conciliazione did not exist.

What did the path from the Castel Sant' Angelo to St. Peter's Basilica look like before Via della Conciliazione sliced its way through? What relics of ancient Rome were displaced or destroyed to create it, and why?

From the final major reconstruction of Borgo in the 15th Century, the site which the Via della Conciliazione now covers remained occupied by residential, religious, and historical buildings for nearly 500 years.

Was the Prime Minister Benito Mussolini that resurrected the idea of a grand thoroughfare symbolically connecting the Vatican to the heart of the Italian capital. To fulfill this vision, Mussolini turned to the prominent Fascist architects Marcello Piacentini and Attilio Spaccarelli.

Demolition of the spina of Borgo began with Mussolini's symbolic strike of the first building with a pickaxe on October 29, 1936, and continued for twelve months.

Even at the time, the demolition proved controversial, with many Borgo residents displaced en masse to settlements ("borgate") outside of the city. Among the buildings dismantled, either totally or in part, and rebuilt in another position; and other buildings, like the palace of the Governatore del Borgo and the Church of S. Giacomo a Scossacavalli, were destroyed.

However, the construction of the road was only a small feature in the reconstruction of Rome ordered by Mussolini, which ranged from the restoration of the «Castel Sant'Angelo», the clearance of the «Mausoleum of Augustus», to the vastly more complicated site of the «Via dell'Impero» through Rome's ancient imperial remains.

His plan was to transform Rome into a monument to Italian fascism. In five years, Rome must appear marvellous to all the peoples of the world; vast, orderly, powerful, as it was in the time of the first empire of Augustus Benito Mussolini.

The construction of the road continued long after Mussolini's death and the abolition of Italian Fascism.
The final obelisk was installed in time for the Jubilee of 1950. Since its completion, the road has acted as the primary access point to St. Peter's Square, and by extension to the Vatican City itself.

But I can assure you that the walk from the Castel to the Piazza engenders an almost ethereal state of mind and heart. There's a sense that the street, the basilica, the avenue leading not only one's feet but one's eyes and in fact one's soul toward the splendor of the rising edifice are ageless, timeless, ancient: and meant to be.

I'm not sure about the yellow green hue in the sky, but sharpness & composition are superb. Good perspective also. Tfs!

Great perspective. Wonderful soft colours. Bravo maestro

Hi Master
Wonderful capture and perspective
Great historical place and architectural details
Take care

Bom dia Jose,

finally...I saw you have uploaded your image last night, but I couldn't comment (ran out of my greenies and I wanted to give you one).

I don't know where to start...with the image or with the note. They are both magnificent. I was really touched by this words...*But I can assure you that the walk from the Castel to the Piazza engenders an almost ethereal state of mind and heart. * I feel like that everytime when I am in Italy. It doesn't matter where I am, what city I am seeing, what street I am walking on...I always feel that my soul, mind and heart are somewhere above me, experiencing all this on a completely different level.

And what to say about the photo? Excellent. Excellent colours and superb composition. Well seen and well captured.

Abraços,

Stasa

Hi Jose
Good shot of the made in Italy series.
Nice POV and amazing DOF, but I prefer a different hour for taking this shot to eliminate the strong shadows on the left hand buildings. Well done
Regards, Alireza :)

Bom dia JM

hi Jose

A fine shot of the street view showing the fine Italian scenery and architecture of Rome. I wonder on the blue color tone of the sky if it is really what is seen without polariser?

The warm light adds a good contrast and clarity to the details of this POV.

Good work and very helpful note.

tfs, bill

Ciao Jose,

Good Week

Sergio

Hi Jose,
The controversial project of Mussolini has given a splendid result despite its many disadvantages! As usual, you captured the essence of this place so finely!
I love the mood created by the low light and the perspective towards the Vatican. A great addition at your serie!

Hi Jose,
There is more contrast in this scene than you are able to catch. So you did a good job in getting this result, which is great.
It gives a good sight on the great arhitecture. TFS. The note is too long for me. ;-)

Boa tarde José!

Não sabia a história dessa avenida. Obrigado pela nota.
Em relação à foto: Gostei muito dessa ausência de brilho. Penso que o azul do céu com o amarelo do sol contrastam muito bem neste ambiente. Nitidez e DOF, perfeitos.
Meus parabéns, amigo

grande abraço e boa semana,
