Leontice leontopetalum (Rakaf, LeonLeaf) (in Turk. Arslanpençesi)

Rakaf is a member of the family Berberidaceae (order Ranunculales) flowering plants commonly called the barberry family. The family contains about 570 species, of which the majority (450) are in Berberis. The species include trees, shrubs and perennial herbaceous plants.

Leontice is a small genus of about 9 species in S.E. Europe to E. Asia. Perennial glabrous herbs with deeply rooted tuberous rhizomes and leafy stem. Leaves alternate to subopposite, usually 2(-3)-ternately dissected, fleshy, long-petioled and petioluled. Inflorescence terminal racemes, often branched below, or the upper leaves with axillary racemes. Flowers hermaphrodite, regular. Sepals 6 (-9), yellowish, outer smaller. Petals 6, much smaller than sepals, yellowish, scale-like, convolute. Stamens 6; anthers about as long as the filaments, opening by 2 apical valves. Ovary 1-carpellary, 1-locular, with 2-4, erect, basal ovules; style short with hardly distinct, obtuse and short stigma. Capsule inflated, vesicle-like, scarious or membranous, 1-4-seeded, indehiscent but gaping or eroding above to expose the seeds; seeds globose, without aril, blackish.

Rakaf or LeonLeaf [in Turk. Arslanpençesi] is a perennial growing to 0.5m. It is in flower from April to May. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought. The tuber is used as a cure for epilepsy and leprosy. It is also said to be an antidote to opium. It has also medicinal uses as Antidote; Antispasmodic; Miscellany. A soap is obtained from the plant, it is used in removing stains from cloth.
