It's been a while since I posted a 'flightdeck' shot, so I did something slightly different here - thought I'd try an HDR combination to show both the lights inside and the light of the sunrise. Tripod set up and 5 shots of varying exposure taken (don't worry - my colleague has everything under control flying wise) and merged in pp.The sunrise is seen crossing the Arabian Sea off the east coast of Oman (itself a very beautiful country) en route to Australia - a LONG flight..

Extremely interesting David ,I am a bit surprised that you have permission to do this kind of postings in this times of ""amazing security"".
Fine work!

Hi David,
This cockpit view looks fantastic. I really like its sharp exposition, the details and colours of the many instruments. Great clarity and representation of ligcht. Nice HDR shot, TFS!
Best regards,

Hi David; I can't explain why I'm (we're) so fascinated by these cockpit/flightdeck shots - maybe because it's this forbidden mysterious place that no one ever sees (although I remember the days when people were allowed to go up and hang out in there for a while). I find myself staring at this for a long time, taking in every detail, like the drink and food beside your chair, the newspaper on the right that your colleague must have been reading, and all the lights, switches, dials, knobs and controls - it's intriguing and mind-boggling. Oh, and the sunrise .. the best view in the world!! Great shot.

I see you have your priorities right... cup of coffee, newspaper/magazine, colour tv... oops, that's the navigation monitor...!
Excellent shot of the cockpit, great exposure range - HDR is brilliant most times.

Hi David!

Superb image! very interesting shot! creative...good job..

Hi David,
I see you're running out of petrol !! ;-)
Very good HDR. Funny to see those joy-sticks.

Oooo pretty lights, they are indeed mesmerizing.
Nice HDR work David, a very appealing shot.

Hi David,

How long does one have to study to learn all of these instruments? Goodness!! Glad your colleague had everything under control and apparently must appreciate photographers.

This is a terrific shot. I really like all of the details of the "flightdeck". Everything but a rear view mirror and cd player!:) Nice warm light coming in from the sunrise. Good effect on the HDR. You "nailed" it! Lisa

Hi David,
I wondered how you were able to make such a fantastic shot of a Cockpit.
Than I read your Intro - so it's clear - that's your "working-place".
It's just amazing to see this place, I like it very much, thanks

Great work David, everything is in control I mean the exposure the details is great. A compliments also to your buddy. Nice job.

Nice! Perfect use of tripod and HDR to deliver a shot that, frankly, could and should find its place in an in-flight magazine.
Well - almost. I think a bit of noise reduction might have helped in the darker areas of the shot. It becomes quite grainy, but nothing a software tweak wouldn't fix!
Terrific work!

Hello David.
When this looks for reall, can imaging you dont want a Christmas tree in your house, or going to a disco, haha
Excellent work on it, David.
Must tell my friend Georg Martens about it. Like to see his impression of his Airbus. (He is thinking to buy a Nikon D300, I advised him off course the Olympus E 520, haha)
Cheers, Jan

Hi David, really great, amazing detail, can I ask a question, you horizons appear to be level, but the cabin dose not, or is it the lens that is giving an optical illusion

ciao David..
really wooooww.. a so intense and intriguing sight!.. wonderful realise.. an incredible pov.. so striking!! thanks
ciao Marco

Hi David,
Lovely view. since the lefthand seat is vacant I assume that you are the Captain of this flight? By the way, which type of aircraft is this - a B-747 or an Airbus 340?

very nice work.
good balance of both the lights.

Do you fly for Emirates..?

Anyway, great shot indeed - technically very good and the pp/HDR thing works very well indeed. This is a fascinating shot, so much detail to look at. The newspaper, the coffee cup, all those dials, buttons, levers and switsches - my wee lassies would have a field day in there, playing with everything! In fact, so would I..."oooh...what does this one do....?"

Hi David,
Aha, good memories this picture remembers me at the good old times flying ETOPS on night flights with the Martinair B767 over the Atlantic. Great shot my friend, brilliant to use the HDR methode. Agree with Rew about the noise, but the view it self is gorgeous. Do you have ESPN on the MFDU? :-)

Hi David,
Great idea and well executed, Good colours and details both in and outside of the cockpit, I can see you colleague has it under control, is he doing the crossword LOL
Well done
Regards Andy

good exposure and colours

Wow David, that just scares the pants of me!! Seriously, this is an awesome shot, it gives a real feel to what it must be like to be in charge of one of these things. TFS.

Hi David

Fantastio warm cold color contrasts, between the amber lighting within the plane, & the blue sky. The sunset colours provide a secondary warm cold opposition layer. Good sharpness, & I like the horizontal layering into approximate thirds. Tfs!

So much good comments, a lot of people like your shot(s), but it's no one favorite?
Good job, my friend!

Ciao David

Wow! ... This is a view that I can say - Privileged to few people - to sit in this cockpit of this plane and have the world at your feet!
A panel with all these wonderful leds, and you did a beautiful finish in HDR here, I love, it Beautiful!
Excellent visual and very good taste!

good result of the HDR, grainy in the dark areas but still good job, and talking about jobs, yours is impressive, how many parameters !

WHO'S DRIVING THE PLANE?????? HAHA! What a great shot! Incredible wide angle work, I sure hope you don't get up and let the plane do what it wants often! HAHA!~ Cool colors, nice exposure here David!

a very beautiful outcome, Dave, and a nice insight of a cockpit.
i once had the opportunity to sit in the cockpit during a flight, by invitation of the captain.
it's nice to share a glimpse of your 'working space' here.

Found this on the TL intro page as I was signing in this evening and it caught my eye,
An interesting and very effective use of HDR David. So much to understand. Really allows a non flyer to have a good look at all the nobs, lights and dials.

Hi David!!!
You're a pilot!!! Wonderful profession isn't it?
Nice shot, very impressive for someone who unknowns this universe!
TFS, Best regards!

Hi David.

This is a very nice work. I like it very much.

Best regards

Amazing sutff here.
Grea view, maybe doesn't look HDR to a novice eye, but I love the way the flightdec is all lit up.
Very nice.

..very nice work.
good balance of both the lights.

Hi David,

Nice shot. I always wanted to do something like this but B737 cockpits are rather narrow...
Technically and artistically your picture is great.
I posted some inflight pictures of aircraft which might interest you.

Ciao David
I've seen your shot only today, just for a lucky case, and I'm real amazed by!

Wonderful invention and real impressive PP work using HDR.

The idea to catch the flightdeck with cockpits and struments turned on and that nice sunset in background is really genial.
It seems that the plane itself is taking a holiday to go and take a trip alone between sky and sea.

Really thanks for the photo and compliments

Hi David,
Amazing !! thanks for this nice HDR !

Hi David,
Thanks a lot for the picture as I have never seen a flightdeck in a such detail like this. Everything is so perfect here. Due to the limited space that you have here I assume, but in the end it has composed a dynamic picture. Hope to see more of these kinds. Sincerely, Imelda

Wow truly amazing shot David! Although it would be better if it were a Boeing flight deck :) j/k. Fantastic Shot once again!!

Good work and idea David, nice colors, details and lights. I think the sunrise is a bit too bright and you'd better make the white balance in the flightdesk. However, I respect your artistic choices. Thanks for your originality

Hi David, Interesting to see so many interesting details with all the instrument panels all around the seating. Something most of us never get to see these days, unfortunately. In the days before crazy guys, we were sometimes allowed to see inside the cabin in NZ Airways between Wellington and Christchurch etc, at the time regared as a big flight! How times have changed. The light is what attracted my eye to this image. Great result, tfs. Murray.
