«Ladri di Bicicletas» (Bicycles Thief), is a film from the italien director Vittorio De Sica, unanimously considered a classic, voted by the Academy (Oscars) as the most outstanding foreign language film released in the United States during 1949, that celebrates forty years in 2008.

The film tells the story of an unemployed worker called Antonio in the depressed post-World War II economy of Italy, that, after a long wait, gets a job posting flyers (of Rita Hayworth) in the streets of Rome. However, because to this job Antonio needed a bicycle, his wife pawns her wedding sheets to get the money to redeem his bicycle from the pawnbroker.

In the first day of work, the bike was stolen, and Antonio and his son Bruno spend the rest of the film searching for it. Antonio obtains to locate the thief (who had already sold the bicycle) and called the police, but he had to abandon his cause for missing proofs, and because the thief’s neighbors were giving him a false alibi.

At the end of the film Antonio, desperate to keep his job, attempts to steal a bicycle himself, but he is caught and humiliated in front of his son Bruno. However the owner of the bicycle declines to press charges, realizing that the humiliation is punishment enough. Antonio and his family face a bleak future, and the film ends, with Antonio's realization that, after all, he is not morally superior to the thief.

This photo was taken in the village of Côja (clientele of Lousa, district of Coimbra, Portugal center) and is dedicated to Vittorio De Sica that, with this film, taught me to be careful when judging others, because in the end I could be no better than them.

WHat a coincidence Jose. I was just watching the 'Bicycles Thief' movie a week ago on cable TV. This is such a wonderful tribute to Vittorio De Sica, a favorite film director. The image indeed reminds me of the film. It has a nostagic feel to it and could very well be a period scene from the movie. My compliments and best regards...Danilo

Ho Jose,
Great composition with the old-fashioned houses and the bicycle. Beautiful colours and contrast, nice vertical positioning of the image. Well done, TFS!

Bonour Jose,
Atmosphere, atmosphere...yes I loved Le Voleur de Bicyclettes in B&W and other films less known as le General della Rovere. This is a good shot with great Pov and colours and De Sica and neorealism are not very far.

Hello Jose,
nice note about a classic of our cinema, and also very good morals to close the note.
I am pleased that you have dedicated such a beautiful picture to a film so beautiful.
Best regards
Have a nice week end.
Giorgio

Good subject, good composition, good sharpness and detail.

Personall I would go for a tighter crop, perhaps eliminating the foliage and the archway on the left to keep the shot simpler and more singleminded in its subject.

hi jose.

i'm impressed. another unique approach to a common theme. i like the way you capture it like its just a part of a whole compo and yet it draws attention of its own. beautiful, especially with the long vertical presentation. my congratulation.

... and if the photo is not enough by itself, you also quote one of the masterpieces if Italian Neorealistic cinema!
Ladri di biciclette is a movie that all Italians should see, to remember that not so many years ago we were a poor nation coming out of WW II as a devastated country, both physically and financially. all those fellow countrymen of mine who have become intolerant towards immigrants and consider themselves above the uncertainties and difficulties of life should travel back in time and see what we were.
I love the subdued colours and the lonely, almost forgotten bicycle. well done!

dear josè , the bike is resting briefly, but rearing to go forward to see more of the world,
and your note is magnificent as usual , good night maestro!
really we may be no better than the next person whom we may be tempted to judge-
we must always bear that in mind, first and foremost -

Ciao Jose

Lindo Visual, bonito a composição,

Sem dúvida bem composto e
apresentado com grande cores e nitidez,
Como ja te falaram um elegante tiro!

This is a lovely shot.
In a sense, exotic, makes you want to travel.
I like the composition, and the vibrant colours. I wish you would have included a bit more of that arch..it make me want to see more of it. I guess we all see things differently.
Would make a nice postal card..)))

Hi Jose, a nostalgic capture from an old street with nice composition and colours. The architecture resembles that of Cyprus. TFS.
Cheers,
Bayram

Excellent POV and vertical composition Jose!
The use of color here is especially appealing.
Well placed the bicycle in the frame, an artistic view.
Well done.

HI Jose
I remember seeing this film and it seems like centuries ago, when many italian films were very popular with stars like S Mangano,S Loren, and the other Vittorio, mostly black & whites. Really good movies.

You did a great job with the photo and also with the note, and I admit that the last paragraph of what it taught you is so apropos.

Hi Jose
A nice tribute to a great personality and as usual a carefully combined note with a foto. I still use my bicycle on the everyday errands as my city is flat and using a car is pointless. In Great Gatsby in the beginning there's a similar idea, "before you criticize someone remember that not all had the same opportunities as you"

Ah...a poignant image and an excellent note to go with it! Good composition and light quality to ensure most of the attention is on the bicycle, yet there is still a good sense of context and mood. Interesting incidental details. Well done!

Marvelous work, Jose!
Love the combination of compositional contrasts: vertical/ horizontal, blue/orange, curved/straight lines, as well as the inclusion of the bicycle, a very suggestive element, and the overall plasticity of the image. That archway certainly leaves enough room for a virtual escape...
Best regards,
Diana

Ciao Jose'. This is a refined and important taken. Good perspective and contrast. The broken arch is the sign of a great artist. A magnificent tribute to the Italian's cinema. Thanks my friend.

Hi Jose!
Very good shot with a great atmosphere and details. I saw the film long time ago on TV in Hungary , I liked it very much.
I was happy when I read the story of the film (recalled the history) and the wise thought at the end on your note.
Thanks!

An excellent PoV Jose.I like the soft effect of the painted walls of the houses, and the cobbled street. No over-exposure here, just a masterful use of the light.
The bicycle is perfectly placed in the frame.
Good interesting notes.I want to see this film now!

Very well seen and captured, Jose. The portrait orientation of the frame compliments the vertical lines of the doors and windows. The bicycle is well-placed in the lower right. The worn colors of the wall provide a warm feel. Nice work.

Olá José!

Gostei muito da solidão nesta fotografia e perspectiva.
O efeito aplicado no chão também é muito interessante. Aumento do brilho? Ou isso ja é alguma opção da camera?
Parabéns meu amigo.

um grande abraço.

An essential and effective composition, with good distribution of space, a fine depth, where the eye focus naturallly on the bicycle. Molto bene,

You know I just love this shot! There is something about the bicycle, sitting there, alone, parked that says a lot and adds a lot to the shot. Something about the light hitting the top of it that is so nice. I think without it it would just be an ordinary shot! Very well done Jose!
