My contribution to the Helen's theme...
The great stone architecture of Machu Pichhu from Incas :-) from my 2006 Peru trip. Shooted with my old buddies (both camera and lens).

Machu Picchu is located about 80 km from Cuzco high in the Andes mountains. Archaeologists think that it was probably a royal estate and religious retreat built between 1460 and 1470. It was constantly being remodeled. Builders, attendants, planters, priests, artisans, and mamacunas probably lived there all the time.

Master engineers, the Inca built structures that are still standing today. At Machu Picchu, the most famous Inca settlement, stone terraces prevent erosion and provide level spaces for planting, making the most of difficult terrain.

The Inca’s best known building technique is that of fine masonry, in which carefully shaped stones fit together perfectly without mortar or cement. Only the most important buildings were built using this tedious and slow method.

Incas are considered as the great stone masonries. It is still believed that "The rocks used to dance on their command."

These walls were, and are, so strong that the Spanish often chose to simply build on top of them instead of destroy them. As if the stone streets and the city’s “living museum” feel were not enough, seeing these hundreds of years old stone walls as you make your way about town is truly a treat.

All the stones used were either from the mountain or carried by people on this height without any mechanical equipment.
All the work is done by hand, and with chisel and hammer.

These are ruins of the houses at Machu Pichhu. The way they've constrcuted it that early morning sun rays will fall on house and lit up everything. Don't forget that Incas were Sun worshiper.

Enjoy this great structure from Inacs.

Greetings Vandana,I am always amazed at the building techniques of civilizations from centuries past, those that are still standing, whether in ruins or not are a testement to the skill of these civilizations, how did they acquire the knowledge to build structures that would last through the centuries, & without the mechanical equipment that is used today.Your image is a great example of their expertise.TFS

Hi Vanny,
Instead of the technical side just one question: are You sure this magic settlement (and the several others in South America) was built by the Incas in the Middle Ages? Not by another, much older civilization thousands of years ago?! What the official archeology says about this type of cultures is a simple nonsense and is nothing but lie.
Congrats for the photo (You can see I like it), cheerz, László

Amazing shot !!and must be great experience to be there and making those amazing pictures :)
