Hattuvaara is a small village of Finland ( As a matter of fact it is the most eastern village of the country ).There is a small museun in the center of the village dedicated to the wars fought along the border with the Soviet Union .The village's position a few Kms from the Russia borderline made Hattuvaara see much action during the 1940's Winter and Continuation wars ( Wikepedia has a good description of this subject...).In fact the area around is littered with relics of these past wars : Tanks, artillery guns , bunkers you name it and several monuments have been erected to commemorate these events as well.
This photo was taken in one bunker built right into the side of a left intact trench behind the museum .In the bunker one finds beds in the far corners and right in the middle stands a long table on which sits a radio illuminated by the light of a single window .It is cool and damp in here .As much as this radio, now silent maybe only be just a relic of the past ,still my thought goes to the soldiers who, in the depth of the harsh winter and in the thick of the fight laying in wait for the ennemy to show up ,listened to that radio for better for worse if only it served whatever purposes it was meant for ,that of relaxing the mind ,loosening up the tension and no doubt breaking the monotony then i think it played an important role in the everyday life of the bunker back then....
Shot in available light at 1/60sec iso 80 and F/2,8 thank you for your appreciated comments,
Regards,Carol

Hi Carol,

Interesting photo of the radio. I like the play of light and shadows you have in the image. The black and white really accentuates the time period for me.

Your choice of frame is complimentary to the subject. I think that when a frame is barely noticeable, you've done the photo justice.

Superbe capture.
Le N&B lui donne vraiment un air du temps.

I ador this one for the simplicity and the dream of tranquility, original again and well done.

Remnants of war are sad. Man must always have another's properties, people and war. Very good photograph, filled with feelings of how a little object probably brought so much joy!!!!!1 BW was an excellent chice!

Hi Carol,
A really well composed picture! The contrast is excellent - the deep shadows enhancing the solitary radio and the single window together create an isolated mood. The bare simplicity is amazing and is what makes black and white photography so effective. Excellent use of the natural light. Very well done!
