i like this subject and the colors are vibrant and beautiful.

were you using a tripod? with the lens you are using, you should be able to capture tack sharp bird pictures, if you weren't using a tripod you're not getting the most out of your lens.

John, first a good effort.
If I had an opportunity like this, I would certainly take care of business, such as, focus, exposure and composition. Yep, I'm giving you a tuffy, cause you have a wonderful machine and monster. "20D and super tele zoom."
In situations like this, shoot a million shots if you can. Keep in mind the rule of thirds, POV, and DOF. Nine squares in frame, "Position of view, and Depth of field."

Quel bel oiseau que le cardinal! Difficile à photographier toutefois. Mais cette prise de vue est bien réussie avec une bonne netteté. Rouge superbe.Bien fait.
