Hibiscus Flower

Orange for the Netherland's Football team!!

My daughter bought this Hibiscus flower for my husband’s birthday last year, and now, even though it is winter, it is still flowering. It’s still only about 2 feet tall and every day it seems to have a blossom on the plant.

I took this photo tonight as the sun was setting and the sun’s last rays were shining on the plant.

For a lot of people, hibiscus is the tropical flower, often associated with Hawaii, Polynesian dancers, surfers, and the like.

In actuality, tropical hibiscus have about the most complex genetic heritage of any collection of ornamental plants; there is one certainty: like so many other things, the hibiscus flower came to the Caribbean from somewhere else. In fact, any hibiscus flower found in the region was planted by someone, given that the birds and insects of the islands appear not capable of pollinating these flowers, so seed is hardly ever produced without hand pollination.

There are about 200 species of hibiscus known to exist, and each species has its own unique kind of flower. However, all hibiscus flowers share certain features. There may now be over 10,000 named varieties of tropical hibiscus, with six distinct forms of flowers, and more colours and combinations of colours than any individual can effortlessly imagine.

Ruud asked me a few questions so I have now posted the original photo as a workshop so you can see how close I was.

I usually always have this lens on my camera - Tamron AF28-300 XR - and I have learnt through trial and error to not stand too close to the flower (etc) when photographing a close-up like this. I lost a lot of photos trying to get too close with this lens.

I don't use rings or ring flash. This was hand-held - no tripod.

Hi Janice,
This is very nice. It is somewhat similar to a post that I made some time back of a white hibiscus from my garden. As you say, there is so many varties. I was so surprised to find that these will grow merrily even in this cold Canadian climate!

Very nicely done, Janice. You selected a nice composition & crop with a good choice of DOF. The flower is very sharp to the tip of the stamen which is not easy because it is very long. The little droplets of water are a nice addition. Well done!

You have consoled me!
I also never use a tripod, because I don+t have any, and think it would be pretty stupid (for me) to carry arround a tripod to get a still photo of a bee or something like that. Anyway I bought nov EOS 350D, with lenses 28-135, and a macro ring and was dissapointed with my macro shots! With macroring no AF is available and I don't see very well for manual, or my hands are shaking ...
Now I see practice does a great job!
Thanks!
J.
P.S. Winter?
We are boiling here! (((*_*)))

Hi Janice,
Macro shot par excillence. Colors are vivid, clear& fresh. The focus is razor sharp. The water droplets magnify the romance of this beautiful Hibiscus.
Great framing,
