Buckfast Abbey.

Since time immemorial, deer have been drawn to graze in the sheltered meadows which line the banks of the river Dart in this Devonshire valley and quench their thirst in the cooling waters which flow here from high up on the moors and down towards the sea.

It may be that it was a favoured spot for these animals, and people who saw them thought to name the place. as Buckfast, since the name can mean a place where deer feel safe.

Buckfast Abbey is the home of a community of Roman Catholic Benedictine monks. Monastic life was first recorded at Buckfast in 1018, and continued uninterrupted until 1539, when the monastery was dissolved under King Henry VIII. Monastic life resumed in 1882, when a community of monks exiled from France settled at Buckfast. Soon afterwards, the Community decided to rebuild the Abbey on its medieval foundations. The beautiful Abbey Church that stands at Buckfast today is the result of the monks' hard labour.

This was taken early evening as the light caught my eye falling across the tower of the Abbey.

Well captured Steve. Well detailed. Love the color of the sky. Good job.

Hi SteveSuzanne,
What a beautiful abbey at the right time of the day. The tower is almost glowing as it is bathed in the setting sun. Great mood captured at the right time! The human element provides vital life to the abbey and the 3 persons were at the right position too.

Nice and clear. beautiful architecture captured well. POV and choice of time is great. Well done.

The nice play of light and the clouds adds interest and beauty to the splendid architecture. The three persons walking towards the abbey give a sense of scale and purpose. I would have cloned out the lonely walker. What do you think?

hello suzley, great pic, very nice object, typical england building, nice color, and superb note,
Regards, Marco

Gorgeous.... no other word to describe it... just truly beautiful.

Wow, great photo of this building. The people seem perfectly placed too, interesting lighting that day. Wonderful feel to this photo.

hell..i have missed out on some of your best shots recently
that is stupendous and tight framing makes it shout...
well taken

It is strange all the opposite I see in this picture.
Sun & clouds..
Small Abbey that looks big or big Abbey that looks small.
I like the warmth of the colours and the contrast in the picture.

Extraordinary shot and the colors are expectionally well capted, bravo!!!

Hi, Steve & Suzanne!
This photo, like most of yours, is an example of good composition and nice colors. Your pp is adequate to the qualities of the shot. No perspective distortion is visible, though it is common in other photos of rectangular buildings.

What a strange and nice lighting !
Very well done.
Congratulations Steve

Wonderful shot. The bright sunlight on the tower with the angry sky behind is amazing. Thanks for sharing!!!!

And yet another master piece. Stunning colours. Excellent light. Great POV. :-)

Как на картине.

Wonderful shot and the mood is excellent - almost medieval! Well done

Impressive shot of what must be an impressive abbey. Great mood.

Hi SteveSuzanne

I love this photo. The way the lighting gives the golden glow to the abbey and tower in contrast to the patina roof and grey walls.I would love to visit this abbey .

Wow! A fantastic postcard. You are lucky to have such great views around you :) Thanks for sharing.

Exceptional colour and balance. How did you do that? My cathedral/church photo's are always grey and dull.
