Helleborus "Rose"

Q. When is a rose not a rose?

A. When it is a Helleborus

I love these flowers - they may be called a rose, but they definitely aren't.

Commonly known as hellebores, other names are Lenten Rose or Winter Rose, because they flower in the winter.

The flowers droop down and to get this photo I had to get down low to photograph it.

The flowers have five "petals" (actually sepals) surrounding a ring of small, cup-like petals modified to hold nectar. The sepals do not fall as petals would, but remain on the plant, sometimes for many months.

nice to see this flower now; in France we namme her " Rose de Noël" - Christmas Rose.

so have a nice winter time, in your south hemisphere!

... prehaps the focus isn't at the best place (on the right leaf in BG) but for a sweet flower no mater! I like the way you crop it a max! and of course I like this flower too!

Hello Janice,a pleasant shot of one of my favourites.A good PoV;good sharpness on the stamen and an interesting soft feel to the sepals.
There is just something about the shot that I really like.
Tfs, regards Jean.

Hi Janice,
I actually like this shot a lot, but have to agree that the focus looks off. Did you do that intentionally? It has an appealing softening effect with this blossom, but not sure if you planned it that way:) You've captured the details well, not to mention that lovely light coming through the petal on the left. Nice work.

Hi Janice,

A lovely flower, and the center is good and sharp. I think this could have benefited from a smaller aperture, as the shallow DOF has blurred some parts that I think would be better if sharp. There also appears to be more noise than one would expect from 200 ISO, but that may come from cropping or sharpening. The central composition actually works well here.

Warm regards,
Werner

dear Janice,
wow,
a beautiful macro shot of the wonder winter rose,
wavy pink petals are like a graceful lady's hat or bell,
and strange figures of stamina look lady's hair or bell-strikers,
lovely ambience is very nice here,
thank you for your wonderful shot,
Akihisa

Good Morning Janice,

I could live with this shot in my bedroom; it is gentle, detailed and complements my colours perfectly!
It really is a delightful shot!
The textures of the petals lovely and lead the way to a pin-sharp, strongly positioned, interior.
Excellent dof to keep the focal image sharp against the blurred b/g.

Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Beautiful shot. I think the very slight blurring on the petals works extremely well against the sharpness of the centre of the rose. The colour is lovely. I have not seen this flower before.

Beautiful Jannie! so you are in full spring eh? So far we are very hot and no sign of fall yet.... Very nice close shot, excellent details on this. I like your bokeh, did you backlight this? I would have isolated the bokeh and removed the grain, however some people do like grain, for digital I don't! I like grain in film.

Bonjour Janice
Très joli close-up avec un bon focus et de belles nuances de couleurs.J'ai tenté un WS pour diminuer le bruit.Dis-moi ce que tu en penses.Catherine
