I took this shot about a week ago in Parnell, Auckland. I had gone there a few days prior to taking this, but wasn’t completely happy with the shots I took as the sun was in the wrong place, so decided to go back.

These tracks belong to Mainline Steam (seen to the left), and are used to transport old steam trains up and down New Zealand. The company specialize in the restoration of old steam trains and run regular day excursions and multi-day tours throughout New Zealand.

I chose to add a slight B&W effect to the sky to achieve the mood I was after for this scene. You can just spot one of the old trains sitting down the end of the tracks in the distance. Looks like it hadn’t been moved for quite some time, and was covered in graffiti.

To get this low POV, I put my tripod on its lowest setting and kneeled down on the rocks. I had a quick look inside the building while I was there (for a small fee), and they had about 12 or so old trains that were currently being restored. Was a nightmare to take photos inside though as the lighting was very poor.

Hi Scott

Good use of diminishing linear perspective with the railroad track. For a moment, I thought this was Shantytown near Greymouth. Superb colour & sharpness, & I like the low shooting angle. Tfs!

Hi Scott,

Wow, what a great mood this picture has! Simply gorgeous! The colors are their best. The clouds bring immense mood into the capture with this railway track bringing you to the feelings of imagination with 'infinite' limits.
Great original work!

Thanks for posting.

Hi Scott,
A frightening sense of a storm is approaching in this marvelous HDR treated presentation!
A good POV leaving the railway leading us into this deep perspective.
Nice dark colors adorned with good subdued lighting.
Good work, neatly presented!
Regards,

Francis Xavier

hi scott
great image excellent subdued colours good detail and what can I say about the sky.

hi Scott ... amazing composition with great colors and details ... i love the depth dimension in your shots..great work ... regards Harout.

Hi, Scott -
Good eye to see and capture this scene. I like your choice to take this shot from dead center between the tracks, down very low. Great colors, especially the rust on the rails. Very sharp. Nice work.

Great picture
superb composition
beautiful job

Hi Scott,

I like the low pov and although the tracks are very central they pull the eye nicely into the main shot. The only problem I have with this shot is the box at the right with all the graffiti. Good colours and sharp details well done.

Regards
Jon

hi Scott,

How are you?
This is a beautiful view of the railway track. stunning pov with great sharpness and details. wonderful colors with a great composition. loved the placement of the mainline stream over here. good work and thanks for sharing.

Regards,
Sanjib

Hello Scott
I'm allways going to pick out a railway line from a thumbnail! The low pov works well, and the placement of the railway shed gives a good sense of scale to this. It's a shame about the graffiti - seems very 'un NZ'. The sky looks a little too dark for me, but I like the rest of the colours, especially the red of the rails.
Cheers , Les

Hi Scott,
Very impressive photo vith good light colours and excellent HDR.TFS.

Hi Scott,
Beautiful and nice perpective of the railroad tracks,
I like the graffiti on left and clouds,
well presented and composed.
Fantastic colors too.. bravo..
Michel

Hi Scott,

The low POV on this is great. The rusty old rails are well presented and I like the mood you've created with the sky. It's a real shame that there is so much graffiti on the buildings. TFS

Werner

Hi Scott,
another great HDR,a young lad like you, would have no trouble with this POV,I on the other hand would have trouble getting back up:) Kidding aside, its a great angle, really gives impact to the composition. Love all thos details & that old line leading us into the scene. Unfortunately due to this sizing for TL ,it's a bit hard to make out the old train at the end of the line, but no way does that take anything away from this well composed image.
TFS

Ron

Hello Scott.
I like this photo all the rail way. Nice composition and colors. TFS
Best regards Siegfried

Scottie, I think I've voiced my opinion to you on HDR, but I must say you are getting very good at this, and I quite like this one. The colors are very rich, and it seems that you had good lighting that day. I like the sun on the building and on the rails as well. The inclusion of the little graffitied building was a good idea (looks like a little outhouse :), and I really like your low POV.
Great job mate
Trudy

Ciao Scott. An excellent HDR with extremely dramatic sky. Very good perspective and excting light. Perfect details.

Roberto

This is awesome! Gritty, really nice sharpness and pp work on this Scott! I like the lead in railway, which leads you in, but then you are diverted off to the left third and then the right third! Really cool!

Hi Scott
What a great shot. The RAW conversion (into HDR?) works really well to bring out the detail and colouration. So much to look at.
Great stuff.

great low PoV and the F22 has given excellent DoF
good work

Ah, now this is the old Parnell Rail Yards, right? I've been meaning to explore here for years - particularly to see if there are any opportunities for a model shoot.

The processing of the sky is very effective. Good low POV and textbook lead-in of the tracks from each bottom corner.

Rew

Hi Scott,
I like much this subject! It evokes always some old lessons about trains and travellings.
Your low POV is excellent making a great perspective and the HDR treatment gives rich colors revealing also fine textures on the rusty rails.
After having read your note, I thought that a total conversion in B&W could be interesting. I didn't resist.
Bravo! Annie

hi Scott,
this abandoned feeling is very interesting to my eyes.
ending of rusty rails, closed white shutters of old wooden house, lonely shack with graffiti, and anxious sky... all are well composed to make the atmosphere of abandoned space.
even the light itself looks sorrow.
thank you,
Akihisa

hi dear Scott,
this is a fabulous shot indeed, its amazing how the colors and details stand out so sharply... so vividly, and the tracks, the low POV that lead the eye straight to the end, I think adding a bit of B/W to the clouds was a great idea, it definitely created a certain mood to the whole shot.. total success all together..

have a nice day :)

Great comp and POV
The PP work real well with this shot
TFS

The low point of view works well as does the rails leading directly away from the lens.
Pity about the graffiti on the signalmans hut.

HI Scott,

Awesome effect you have created with these clouds. Dramatic and moody. The low POV works well, I too like doing this when I have the presence (and nerve) to do so. :-)

GReat composition. Well done Scott and TFS.

Martyn

Hello Scott,

Your pov is excellent taking the absolute maximum advantage of the tracks, to lead into the shot. There is so much to like about this, from wonderful, sharp focus to excellent, interesting details.
The composition and the lighting contribute towards a fine shot.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Another great shot by Scott ...

Loving the drama in the sky - the colours in the foreground are so well balanced and perfectly exposed and adds that natural feel to the shot.

You have an excellent eye to use the most eye catching POV. Nice sharp pic and great focus - a job very well done Mr Thomas

really really nice low POV Scott, excellent framing and composition. good work with the kit lens too. lots of details!

Scott,
I have nothing but good things to say about your photos. They are brilliant. I LOVE the light in this and the view down the tracks. (I love railroad tracks). Incredible clarity and sharpness, marvelous detail, wonderful color and I like what you did with the sky. There is a fine moodiness to the whole scene, too. It's simply wonderful.
