Artist’s Palette

Looking down over the Artist’s Palette at Wai-O-Tapu, one of Rotorua’s Thermal areas, you can see some of the various colours that give it its name

Artist's Palette is named after the colourful mineral and sulphur-rich deposits that overflow from the Champagne Pool Hot Spring.

The surface features of the geothermal area are generated by groundwater that is superheated deep underground by old magma bodies which have not yet fully cooled.

The superheated water dissolves minerals from rocks and deposits underground and deposits these in places where it reaches the surface and evaporates.

The colours of the deposits indicates the minerals involved in the process and may vary even locally.

The following colours (minerals) are found:

Green (colloidal sulphur / ferrous salts),
Orange (antimony),
Purple (manganese oxide),
White (solica),
Yellow (sulphur),
Red (iron oxides) and
Black (sulphur / carbon).

Hi Janice

I visited Rotorua way back in 1981, but didn't get too many film shots. I was into super 8 movies back then. So glad I visited here, as the similar Yellowstone, was closed in November, when I was in the States, late last year. The people at the back add scale. Tfs!

Hi Janice,

What a great view and what a name for this it is perfect the colours are brilliant and details very sharp very good dof. The people allow me to imagine the true scale of this shot well done.

Very beautiful palette, indeed !

Hello Janice.
Yeh... Nature on its best. It proves we living on a fireball.
Hope Human bean, dont set it to fire above ground.
Very well captured. Thanks for the good story too.

Again, a very interesting view and note Janice. Nicely composed, and as Chris said, the people at the top add to the sense of scale. Is it quite smelly there?
Great shot Janice

Very nice to see another angle, such an interesting place!! Good pov once again and lovely colors. TFS

Étonnante "palette de peintre" naturelle. Un endroit vraiment surprenant très bien photographié.

It's a strange almost alien landscape. The colours influenced by the mixing of the minerals is amazing, I wonder how toxic and corrosive they are? Nicely framed by the foliage abd a great point of vrew for this photo, TFS

Hi Janice,

Splendid color, indeed, also excellent POV and composition. TFS
Bste regards,
