Surfing under the Kaikoura Ranges

This is the view we had of the Kaikoura Ranges just a few kilometres south of the township of Kaikoura. I had to slam on my brakes and park on a side of the road as soon as we saw the snow Ė remember Iím from North Shore of Auckland in the North Island of New Zealand, and we donít ever get to see any snow up there.

And I was pleased to see the lone surfer carrying his board up the shingle beach, he and his car give us an idea of how large the area is I have photographed.

The Kaikoura Ranges are two parallel ranges of mountains in the northeast of the South Island of New Zealand. Formed along New Zealand's Alpine Fault, they can be seen as the northernmost extension of the Southern Alps in the South Island. The Kaikoura ranges are composed primarily of greywacke (a variety of sandstone) and argillite (fine-grained sedimentary rock composed predominantly of indurated clay particles). Phew, what a mouthful - thanks to Wikipedia!)

Kaikoura is a popular surfing destination on the east coast of the South Island with quality breaks up and down the coast stretching 4kms. Its rugged coastline, seal colonies and whale watching makes it one of the most wicked stretches of coast line in the South Island. Kaikoura's surf options are an assortment of reefs, left and right-hand point breaks and numerous beach breaks that work in all kinds of swell.

Note the beach:
Down that coast the sloped beaches of Kaikoura are mixtures of composed sand and gravel derived from a greywacke terrain.

Hi Janice,
Spectacular landscape! Exceptional view on the snow-covered mountains and the light fog in the valley. The depth is so well rendered. Strong contrast with this massive Kaikoura Ranges and the height of surfer.
Great clarity and beautiful colors. I like the range of the shades. Did you use shadows and highlight function?
Bravo! Annie

Hi Janice

A superb land / sea scape, with marvellous colour & sharpness. The snowy peaks are a magnificent backdrop. I like the graphism of the surfboard, against the lighter bg. Tfs!
