Hokianga Harbour

I love this area of New Zealand. As we drive about 4 hours north up the west coast of Northand in the North Island, we come over the Omapere Hill and this is the view – I always have to jam on my breaks and stop – fortunately they have a place to park.

This is the Hokianga Harbour. The view always catches me – it is always changing. I have learnt to take care as I approach the top of Omapere Hill because the impact on drivers of the sudden spectacular view can at times be considered a traffic hazard. This hill presents one of New Zealand’s best views – well I think so.

The Hokianga harbour is also known to Maori as Te Kohanga o Te Tai Tokerau (the nest of the Northern People). The estuary extends inland for 70 kilometres from the Tasman Sea. One of the most beautiful and relatively unspoilt parts of New Zealand.

The sandy piece of land on the left is a giant sand dune of the North Head. Te Arai Te Uru is the outer South Head at the entrance to the Harbour. The harbour mouth opens to the Tasman Sea, always turbulent with many moods. Like most west-coast rivers or harbours in NZ there is a shifting sand bar about a mile out from the heads, treacherous even to those who know it well, and especially when a south-westerly storm sweeps in as well few responsible sea captains would consider entering.

The northern shores are made up of giant golden sand dunes, heaped up to 170 metres high by the westerly winds. While the southern side is green consisting of farmland forest, bush and scrub. The harbour is often visited by dolphins, orcas and seals.

I'm off on holiday tomorrow - no, we're not driving north this time - we're flying to Norfolk Island for a weeks holiday. I should come back with some photos of a few Norfolk Pines...

Catch y'all later

Yes I know the spot Janice..we stopped there in the motorhome on last day of December last year... and its a stunning view.

I think I like the foreground in this photo the most... the beautiful greens.

Thanks for sharing..
and do have a super trip.. will look forward to seeing your photos when you return.

A hug for you
Dawn.

Good morning/evening Janice

A beautiful landscape here, what appeals to me most is the sky.. it has such depth and this might sound silly I am not sure how to explain it but it looks so vast.

Lovely posting, of this superb view

TFS regards Helen

Hi Janice

I like the colour contrast between the yellow grassy bald & the blue sky & sea. A superb lookout & high vantage point. Tfs!

Hi Janice,
I can fully understand you love for this area. I would have the same feeling. What a very stunning view. That sand dune looks huge and sticks out so perfectly from the rest of the landscape. Love the cloud formation and the subtle warm colors in them.
TFS,
Niek

Spectacular view of the island and sea sandwiched between the amazing green landscape and a very strong sky. Well done.

TFS!
