Rocky Bay

In January 2007 all our family stayed on Waiheke Island for a week before my youngest son was married there. We had a wonderful time and I took many drives around the island visiting all the coves and beaches.

Waiheke Island is situated in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand, 17.7 km (about 35 minutes by ferry) from Auckland.

This bay here is Rocky Bay, also known as Omiha.

Rocky Bay offers the perfect secluded island escape. There are many stunning bush clad cliffs and as its name implies, sheltered rocky bays. Boat owners also love this secluded part of the island apart from the rocks!

There is a very small village that is set around this beautiful southern bay and is the home to many artists and craft people.

Close by there are tennis courts and children's playground.

Of the Hauraki Gulf islands, Waiheke is the second-largest (after Great Barrier Island), the most populated and the most accessible by regular ferry and air services.

Waiheke is the third most populated island in New Zealand, after the North and South Islands. The island is 19.3 km long from east to west and varies in width from 0.64 km to 9.65 km, with an area of 92 km2.

Waiheke is very hilly with few flat areas, the highest point being Maunganui at 231 metres, and the coastline is 133.5 km including 40 km of beaches.
