Waiheke Island

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. . .

Waiheke Island
is in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand, 17.7 km (about 35 minutes by ferry) from Auckland. Of the Hauraki Gulf islands, it is the second-largest), the most populated and the most accessible by regular ferry and air services. Waiheke is the third most populated island in New Zealand, after the North and South Islands.

My youngest son was married on Waiheke Island last January, and our whole family of 16 rented a house for the week of the wedding. He and his lovely fiancee chose the vineyard, Stoney Ridge, to hold their wedding at, and as there were many overseas guests invited, they thought Waiheke Island would be a great place to introduce a small part of New Zealand to them.

It was a beautiful wedding ( see photo ) and we had a lovely family week together.

Geography
Waiheke Island is 19.3 km long from east to west and varies in width from 0.64 km to 9.65 km, with an area of 92 km2. The coastline is 133.5 km including 40 km of beaches. The port of Matiatia at the western end of the island is 17.7 km from Auckland and the eastern end is 21.4 km from Coromandel It is very hilly with few flat areas, the highest point being Maunganui at 231 m. The climate is generally warmer than Auckland with less humidity and rain and more sunshine hours.

Demographics
There is a permanent population of around 7,000 residents. Waiheke Island is a popular holiday spot. During the period around Christmas, it is said that the population on the island can swell to over 30,000 people

The Island has award winning vineyards, olive groves and pasture land. The residential areas are in small village settings each with it's own character. There is a slower pace of life than the city across the water and is a great place for a holiday or vacation and to relax and unwind.

Waiheke is also a popular destination for romantic weddings with venues ranging from white sandy beaches to vineyards and up market restaurants.

Another lovely view from NZ, Janice...I love how you have modelled yourselves on Scotland :-)

The combination of land and sea with the wee yachts dotted around really does make this an attractive and interesting shot. Very pleasant indeed!

Hey Janice,

I hope to one day make a stop over in NZ, my oldest cousin lives there, and I think it's high time I see her again, it's been more than seven years since I last saw her! And the fact that she lives in such a stunning part of the planet, really does add more motive to seeing her again. ;)

Beautiful landscape you caught here... and it's so laid back with the sail boats hanging around in the little cove... beautifully natural. Thank you for sharing this Janice. :)

(The note is very lovely too... must have been a great ceremony!)

Biance.

Very beautiful pastoral view! Like the colors, POV.

Very good eh..Evening, Janice.
Wow, what a lovely place this is.
Excellent looking picture you took there. What a magnificent view.! Sure a place to be.
Seen the photo of the wedding couple, looks very lovely too.
Bit late, but congratulations for them.
The story sounds like ours, when our Ingrid got married in Sicily. We rented a large villa at the sloopes of the Etna, since that we're in love with Sicily. Especially when after Johnny got married there a Sicilian girl and is living there now.
Kia ora en groetjes van Jan

Hi!
A lovely view, and one I remember from a six weeks roundtrip at NZ some years ago. Should have been there now...
Warm good colors, and a fine composition.
Very good depth created by the nearby vegetation.
TFS!
Best regards from the snow and moonshine far north.

Hi Janice.

The FG brown trees lead the eye to the penninsula which leads the eye to the islands which leads the eye to the blue water which leads the eye to the volcano. The composition is great. TFS. K2
