It was a very fine and sunny day here in Auckland today, so I decided to make the most of it by spending part of my day at Maraetai Beach. I wasn’t really in the mood to get stuck in city traffic while driving to one of the North Shore beaches, so I decided to head out towards Clevedon and enjoy the rural atmosphere on the way there. Seems like the decision paid off as there was some very interesting cloud coverage circling the skies. The horizon looked quite ‘bendy’ from this point of view, so I tried to straighten it as best as possible.

The official Maori translation for "Maraetai" is "enclosed sea", or "courtyard of the tides”. However, it is known to Europeans as “Meeting Place By The Sea”, and still lives up to its name with people flocking there by the carloads, particularly in the summer months.

It’s a very safe beach to swim at and stretches for miles, connecting onto Omana Beach and Magazine Bay, which are both on the same coastline. You can stroll between each beach using the purposely-built path, and there’s plenty of room to kick a ball or throw a Frisbee around on either shore. Both beaches look towards the Pacific Ocean and offer awesome views from Auckland City to the Coromandel Ranges.

There are two wharfs at Maraetai Beach, one on each end of the beach, and also a large boat club equipped with launching ramps and parking. There’s even a large kids playground next to it, with plenty of shady trees and grass verges.

Ooo beautiful! flew over Maraetai today actually, you might have seen me =P. Lovely depth in this shot, and I'm loving the colours. The clouds were magnificent today I agree!! In my photo of Rangitoto it looks like it's erupting =). I look forward to looking at all your shots I missed out on while absent from TL!!

Hi Scott

Fantastic HDR treatment to bring out the details.
Loved the sky and movement of clouds. Beautiful!
M not sure if u could try avoiding the green plant in the bottom right corner of ur frame???

Hi Scott,

this place is amazing. So beautiful, so peaceful...it looks like a paradise. I have to agree with Cadi's critique - lovely colours, DOF and what a marvelous sky. The only thing I will add to his critique is...this is 1st class shot all the way. Nothing more to say.

Best regards,

Hi Scott

Good warm cold colour contrasts, between the pale yellow ochre sand & deep blue black sky. The natural, inverted 'c' shaped curve of the beach, provides excellent lead in lines. Superb sharpness & lighting. Tfs!

Hello Scott,
I like how the lines of the land, the beach and the sea seem to echo the lines formed by the clouds. The result is a truly harmonious, peaceful composition.
Good effect of the polarizer: not overdone, just what you needed to make the sky really contribute to your composition.
TFS & kind regards,

Hi Scott, As an ex-surfie from Oakura Beach (New Plymouth), i like to see your NZ beach scenes very much. The light has a mystery about it, and the result is excellent. The sky is particularly attractive. Good work, Murray.

Hi Scott

Well done

Nice, peaceful beach with great light on the sand and an amazing sky. You managed the colours very well, not overdone !
Good job again Scott !

regards, willie

Hi Scott,
A wonderful moody photo with an interesting post treatment. Although not sure what you did to it, the winter mood has certainly been captured. it has a bit of a color infra red to it although the colors are more natural.

hello scott

whoaw a quiet beautiful place, anywhere to the beach
wonderful colors with beautiful clouds in the sky
good composition
i love it

Hello Scott,

Your pov is perfect to make maximum use of the curve of the beach. You have created very interesting layers of different colours and textures from the vegetation, the sand, the sea and the sky.
I love the whispy clouds which seem to be working with the same objective as the curve, to draw the eyes deeper into the shot.

Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Hi Scott,

As always this is a very beautiful view the sandy beach pulls the eye nicely into the full picture. The sky is brilliant imo great colours and sharp details the dof is also excellent well done.

Hi Scott,

The sky is amazing in this wonderful composition. Great POV and although the bush to the right isn't the most photogenic, it fits well into the shot. I see only one shutter speed listed, is this HDR using one exposure?

Take care,

Hi Scott
you really framed well using nature here.

Hi Scott, kinda hard to believe, 11:16am & a beautiful beach empty, except for the fortunate photographer, some guy's have all the luck:)
I like your POV the S curve always makes for a strong composition & I like how the sandy beach leads us into the scene. The sky is very vibrant & balances well with the landscape. How many mountains are there in the background? Man I hope you took advantasge & wen't for a swim after securing your camera gear of course:)

The details are sharp and clear, the colors are dreamy with beautiful sky
I like the curve creates by seashore

Hi Scott,
Beautiful winter shot of this beach, but despite the sunny day, watching thos blue colours I rather feel cold. :) But those ones are really nice and you managed to take a beautiful picture of the scene. Saturation and contrast are nicely high, well done, TFS!

Hi, Scott -
Fantastic view along this arch of beach. Very sharp, great management of the warm sunlight. The sky and clouds are fantastic. Inviting and beautiful. Well done.

Bonjour Scott,

Jolis graphismes pour cette plage qui semble un peu trop déserte, mais aux couleurs fabuleuses!!!

Hello Scott,
Stunning view!
Lovely sky, the clouds are typical for Australia and New Zeland, we won' see them in Europe, too bad,...
Fantastic colours and light.
Interesting note - as usual.
Excellent composition and presentation.

Hi Scott,

once again a stunning view with top quality work... attractive indeed.. the clouds, like a brush strokes, the glowing water and the soft texture on the sand..and how it's molded gently with the water, the little curves leading the eye to the greenery in the BG... all details are balanced and exposed perfectly... work of Art again..

have a nice day my friend

Hi Scott

hi Scott,
curved lines are so graceful,
both on the beach and in the sky,
those make very graceful ambience in this picture.
and the contrast between deep blue of the sky, dark blue of its reflection on the water and bright cream of the sand is nice to express the light there.
whole image is quiet and peaceful, but it includes the power of slowly moving earth.
thank you,

Hi Scott,
WOW, what a great beach shot. I love the blue sky and water in this pic. The natural lines of the sand and foilage off the beach are excellent. The detail and sharpness here are very good. Excellent work.

Salut Scott.
Le contraste froid et foncé donne a cette belle image une effet assez particulier.
Les couleurs sont très belle et la netteté parfaite.
Bonne journée.

Hi Scott,
wonderful landscape. Excellent light and sharpness. Splendid the blue shades of the sea and sky. Very good POV.
Ciao :-)

Oh, my goodness,
what sensational light! I love the way the light colored sand picks it up and curves it around. The richness of the color in contrast to the sand is fabulous. Marvelous sky, wonderful curve to the beach, lovely balance. What I especially like is the feeling of solitude and it must have been heaven to hear nothing but the sea birds and the waves washing ashore. You get a BIG ole sigh from me for a place so beautiful as that. Just phenomenal. Many thanks and warmest wishes,

quel cile, une merveille, ce flanelles blanches bougent, avec la belle plage, qui fait sa courbe, le sable, avec ce contraste à sa surfacte, l'eau avec les ombres et lumière, fantastique.

Bravo et amitié
