One of our younger but no so active (these days) members celebrates a birthday on the 25th July, to Otti (Snapper), son of Christan (c_rapp) and Otto (TheMystic) Rapp my best wishes on your day.

I contacted Otto and asked if Otti had any preferences, exotic animals, of which Tasmania has a few and pirate ships were on the list along with the colour red. The ship pictured here and the one I showed here were as close as I could get to the real pirate ship.

The ketch-rigged yacht ‘Premier’ began life as the trading ketch ‘Everlyn May’, she was a most attractive vessel of 48 feet. She was built by Perc Coverdale at Battery Point; Hobart for the prime purpose of running case timber from the southern sawmills to the fruit growers bordering the Huon River and was also used for scallop fishing in the early channel days.

After a number of trading the Tasmanian Government ‘Everlyn May’, refitted her an named her ‘Premier’. For over 20 years as a patrol vessel she performed many rescue operations in Southern Tasmanian waters and was also used for entertaining special guests of the Government.

‘Premier’ was then sold to a private owner. It changed hands a couple of times, before Tony Jory realised its potential. Tony said of the ship “I loved the boat from the start and I had sort of decided we were going to do a fair bit to it, but didn't really expect it to be in a shed for 11 years during the rebuilding”.

Rumours around the Tamar Yacht club are that this refit from the keel up cost in the vicinity of AU$1,000,000.

Well my friend of many faces, you out did yourself on this one. Beautiful colours and details. The sky and land in this one are stunning in their simplicity and depth. You don’t have to have a lot of mist in your shots to capture this wonderful dreamy mood. Happy birthday Otto and congratulations Christan and Otto on your great son’s day.

hello David,
I especially like this composition because of the highlights of blood red in the grey/blue.I also like the balance of the reeds in the foreground and the reflection of the little boat's rigging.

This is certainly one of your best David! I love the comp here, excellent use of thirds both vertically and horizontally! And what's this? A straight mast? Unheard of!! Love the red in this one! Good work!

Hello David,
The elements in this nautical scene are all appropriately placed. Very nice and I like it. The cloudy day really enhanced the water reflection. Another distinguishable and commendable posting from you. Danilo

Thanks David, great picture and bday wishes for Otti! He is thrilled!
Reason he is not so active lately is that he lost his camera while on vacation in Vienna
(he left his knapsack on a train - no luck in lost and found)
Thanks again

Hi David,
Perfect positioning of the weeds in the foreground to anchor your main scene. This is a lovely tranquil setting ... I like the overall lighting and soft colors ... it is like a painting. The white boats stand out amidst the predominantly gray background. Well captured and composed ... I like the overall balance of the image. Excellent work! tfs

hi David

Superb capture of the calmness and reflection on the water for the yachts and this is a really peaceful moment.

tfs, bill

Excellent notes about this vessel, David.
A very dedicated individual to spend all that time, and money, on one project!
However, I think I would like to own it! It has a great appearance and smacks of 'adventure' and excitement!
Your treatment has given it a real 'umph'! The silvery skies, reflected in the water, serve to show off the detail and the beauty of this lovely boat, along with its baby sister, in the b/g!

I'm sure Otti will love this!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi David,
I like the basic composition here and your additions in post really enhance the feeling of stillness; the subtle glow effect, at least that's how it feels to me, adds a wonderful dreamlike quality to the basic image.
Nicely done.
Thanks for the view,

Very beautiful shot and perfect gift:)
may I join to birthday wishes:) ??:)

I specially love note about cake ;))
warm regards

Hi Dave, what a beautiful scene. It looks so still and silvery.
Excellent contrasts with the paintwork on the boats against the silver sky and water. Lighting and colours stand out well - bravo - I really like this shot.

Hello David,

This is really a fine vessel, something for Otti to dream about until he grows up and can get one for humself!
Belated Happy Birthday, Otti!
As usual an excellent composition with moody colours...
