Will it get smaller than that? The ant is less than 3mm long. Whenever the wasp comes too close, the ant turns around and lifts its 'hindquarter' up and the wasp backs off. Some chemical warfare defence I guess. The ant is not intimidated by the big bully. Who said size matters?
Hasten to add, NO Photo shopping here other than cropping. Handheld Shot RAW. BTW no animals were harmed making these pictures!

Very impressive macro picture! This is very well composed and attractive.Bravo!
Michel

Again, to shoot a macro like this, handheld at 1/250 is - to me anyway - pretty damned impressive. The f14 has given a great DOF here and the overall exposure is about as good as it gets. Getting the ant and the wasp in the same shot and having both in such great detail is fairly breathtaking - one of the best macro shots I've seen on TL.

Hi Helmut

Thanks for your note ... you write as if photoshop is a bad thing?

Good photo.

LOL!! I like that title :) It's just as attractive as the awesome quality and moment captured. Richard said it well, and I just have to add a word, SALUTE!. This really is a cool shot!!!

Nice note as well.

Regards,
Ramdan.

Well done Helmut,
great DoF and hand held as well! Its amazing to have witnessed the confrontation never mind capturing it on camera.
Great to hear that no animals were harmed - I did wonder if they had succumbed to chemical warfare from a can prior to shooting.
great work

details are superbly seen and captured and both insects are in a great pose too!

Thanks for sharing

Very good macro shot. I agree. Size does not matter here.. :)
Are both insects figthing for same food, or teritory?

Helmut,
You seem to have a pretty good handle on these macros!
This is handheld! Incredible! I have seen documentaries where this ant summon 100 million of his closest friends and then the wasp gets carried away piece by piece! I think the focus is outstanding here as well as the PERFECT composition.
I look forward to learning a few things from your macros!
Keep up the superb work!
Scott

Hi Helmut,

Wow! This macro shot is simply amazing! Bright colours, excellent lighting and incredible details.

Not only is the picture technically impressive, but you captured a very interesting interaction between the two insects. There is a story behind, and your title summarizes it with humour.

Hats off! TFS!

Mireille
