Heron island is a coral cay at the southern end of the great barrier reef.

A cay (also spelled key or quay; all are pronounced alike as "key" IPA: /kiː/) is a small, low island consisting mostly of sand or coral. The word is used almost exclusively in the Caribbean[citation needed], though it is sometimes used in the context of other tropical environments, such as the Great Barrier Reef, Belize Barrier Reef, and especially in the Florida Keys.

Sand cays are formed when tidal action, wind and sea birds deposit coral debris and sand onto reef flats over a long period of time. These deposits usually occur on the leeward side of the reef, but occasionally made on the windward side. Weather affects the formation of cays greatly; large tides would bring much more debris onto the cay and thus make it larger, while a hurricane could completely obliterate a cay.

Hello Tim,

Great shot. Excellent sharpness and details. I like the waves. Good clarity and stunning contrasting. Good POV and compositions. Well done!

Great effect from the polariser with rich, deep saturation throughout.
The folding waves look almost surreal in their sharp detail. The footsteps on the sand are the final, brilliant touch.
The storybook tropical island!

lovely colours and subjects here, Tim.
i like the wet sand and at 1/125s the wave is nicely captured. the blue horizon beautifully divides the sea and sky. well done!
