Transport on Norfolk Island

Norfolk Island has a colourful history tainted with an unimaginable legacy of cruelty and bloodshed. The Historic Kingston (Norfolk's Capital) Precinct at the southern extremity of Norfolk is the most significant historic site on the Island. Kingston is where the first convict settlement landed and the construction of buildings and roads began.

These are a couple of the old row boats that were used to ferry produce and passengers ashore from visiting ships to Norfolk Island – they have seen better days, but it is interesting to see these timber boats by the wharf in Kingston.

There are no safe harbour facilities on Norfolk Island, with loading wharves existing at Kingston and Cascade Bay. All goods not domestically produced are brought in by ship, usually to Cascade Bay now. Even the many cars and buses on Norfolk Island have been brought ashore by tenders from the ships. Even landing a dinghy can sometimes be very difficult.

Check out the workshop – it shows the wharf at Kingston – it is a fine day today – not too much wind, and hardly any waves. . .

Hello Janice

Nice POV of these old rowing boats. Nice rustic colours and textures. TFS.

Hi Jancis,
Well seen, I like this kind of historical pictures. A fine composition, only a pity the sky is a bit dull. The WS are interesting too. Well done my dear Janice.

Good photo Janice
(I would have cropped out the house on left, cover it with a magazine and you see what I mean)
Do not read me wrong , it is a beauty.
WS is also a good story on its own

What a cool shot Janice.
This could so easily be England or Scotland.
I'd never had guessed this was Norfolk Island.
The wharf in the workshop reminds me of the wharf at Alofi on Niue where I lived as a kid.
There was a crane the same as this one and I used to climb to the top and dive off.
Thanks for sharing this.

Hola Janice:

Buen disparo, un POV muy bueno y un gran colorido.

Hi Janice, I am still attempting to relocate that book at the library, I know it isn't in my bookshelves. Two excellent images of another convict outpost. Lovely detail and good colour. TFS,

Hello Janice,

Very beautiful place, wonderful colors and an excellent job!

Hi Janice,
Great shot of the old boats...not sure about the building on the left I feel as if we need to see more of it instead of cropping it.
A nice low PoV
