[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I have the great opportunity of photographing the US Olympic Trials this weekend. This is a shot from a practice session. The images from the televised broadcast are not allowed to be distributed.

These action shots are not easy for me. A lot of thought work has to go in to making the camera fast enough and accurate enough to get the shot. The depth of field has to be correct and the panning accurate. White Balance, ISO, shutter speed and aperture are all set to manual so the camera can avoid "thinking"...

I believe that there are several challenges one has to face while capturing such fast action shots and I must appreciate that you have a great talent to execute it well, Roger!

This is another wonderful work from you where you have brilliantly frozen the moment.
The light and exposure are perfect and clarity is nice.
B/W tones make this picture even lost-lasting in its appeal.
I like the placement of US flag shown in a dim light (in BG).

Kind regards,

Hi Roger.

Superb positioning for this fast action shot, i do so like the semetry associated with the pose mid air. The flag plays a prominant part in this scene, the lighting gives a wonderous effect across the gymnast. tfs

stv ;o))

Bom dia Roger,
This is a sacred moment that you could carve out the time. The angle, depth, energy, harmony and rhythm all fit in a magic sanp.
All my admiration,

Hi Roger, good job with the details in this, you can even see the sixpack..I'm not American but I love the faint flag in the bg, it adds something special to the shot.Fiona

Hi Roger,on viewing this image I would think that the light must be difficult to handle, though you have no problem with it is obvious, and you have definately managed to seperate the gymnist, from the background stands & seating area. You must have been located pretty close & under the athelete, your timing & camera settings, are perfect to capture his flight from off the bar, in such clarity & sharpness of detail.I presume that the light on the athlete was of more brilliance than that in the background stands & that your setting of F stop & fast shutter speed kept the background that much darker but enough to include your countries flag,so that there would be no mistake as to which country this athlete belonged to:-).Great details IMHO.

Action shot for most of us are not easy. Great results here. Canon 5DIII I've had a month now, just ONE amazing camera. Enjoy the adventure, Roger

Fantastic timing and capture of this Olympian! Awesome lighting and great use of the dark background to isolate the subject. Sharp details. Well done, tfs.

Bring it on Roger! - great shot and absolutely superb detail for such high ISO - no noise at all, nicely timed with just the right amount of background blur. The D5 is working for you and your thinking for the camera has paid off big time. Are you attending the Olympics? Best wishes

Olá Roger

I like the composition...there is a correction in all details and in your timing. You understand very well what you photograph...that´s why it come so well.

Hi Roger

A good decisive moment shot with excellent sharpness and good graphism. I like the oof US flag in the bg, but it would have strenghthened the compo to have it a little further right & separated from the athlete. Good to include the bars for context. Well composed with no part of the frame wasted & adequate breathing space. Tfs!
