[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
My Dad recently loaned me his Nikkor 80-400 zoom lens. I affectionately call it the "bazooka" since most of my lenses are about half it's size and for me, this lens is huge. That being said the lens is obviously great for getting up close or closer to something that is far away. This image is a great example of what a long telephoto can do.
I live in the town of Petaluma, California which is about 35 minutes north of San Francisco in the Sonoma wine country. One thing Petaluma gets is a lot of fog and I've learned over the years that fog can indeed be your friend when it comes to images.
There is a view point about 15 minutes from where I live that is high enough in elevation to get above the fog under the right conditions. This image was shot on such a morning. I took several images of the hills and fog before the sun rose but once it did those images were forgotten as the early morning light on the various hills really enhanced the scene. The interplay between sun, fog, and terrain really spoke to me. The view for the people who live in this house isn't too bad either.

Hi Mike, I love your work... this morning shot with the sun golden light painting the hills and the fog white color makes a great contrast... Nice soft tone colors with good contrast.
I visit Petaluma often where my fiend has a ranch and a barn, its such a lovely country. TFS

Freaking breathtaking...
my first Navy duty station was between Vallejo and Napa to one side and Sonoma to the other. That is so beautiful. That soft morning light, the low lying fog, what must be a winery in the distance lit by the sun, the trees rising from the fog. Lovely, soft morning color. I have very fond memories of that part of California and you bring them to life. Wonderful. Many thanks and kind regards,
Shelly

Hello,
Very interesting view, great mist and light. Very nice tops of hills and trees.
Regards
Lucja

Hi Mike, I love the light in this, the fog kind of separates the image into more than one shot. If you crop from the top of the bottom hill down you have an entirely different shot with the fog looking like clouds. Fiona

Hi Mike,
A dreamy atmosphere here on the mountains with the clouds beneath us! A superb capture with this huge telephoto zoom lens! Perfect exposure and a considerable DOF.
Nice early morning atmosphere with perfect light management.
Well done,

Francis Xavier

Hello Mike

Almost looks like another planet. I agree that the view must be awesome for the folks in that far away house. Your image is proof that to get the best images......you must first get off your sofa and go get them. Well done on your capture of this special moment in time. The sihouettes of the trees and hills popping out of the low clouds (fog) created a work of art. nice

Jimmy
