[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I have been working toward photographically collecting all the lighthouses of the Great Lakes for my web site, and maybe for a gallery exhibit or book. South Haven lighthouse is on the west coast (east shore) of Lake Michigan, and is a shortened version of the Muskegon lighthouse further north.

Every time I have been on location to shoot the South Haven (Michigan) lighthouse, the light, the weather, or some other circumstance made it less than ideal, and any images I made were not optimum.

This day was partly sunny, with a bit of haze making the sky a dull bluish-grey. While this one is still not the perfect image (would have liked some clouds in a blue sky), I thought it enough merit to process it.

Shot from the beach using the 1.4x extender on the lens in RAW file format, PP began with PS RAW adjustments to the basic color image. Using NIK Viveza, I made overall color balance adjustments, adding structure, and some minor exposure/brightness/contrast balance. Then back in PS, I made layer selections of the FG water and the BG sky to balance their exposure with the lighthouse and pier. I also cloned out several people standing on the pier. For the conversion to monochrome, I returned to NIK Silver Efex and processed the image adding a vignette and copper/duotone to the image. In PS made some further minor adjustments.

The color version is posted in the Workshop.

Hi Larry,
A splendid capture of this majestic Light House in such an adequate sepia treatment to render a sort of old photograph. I like the vignette around the frame. Great details in the structure and the waves with surf indicating a windy ambient.
Well done for this neat work.

Very nice work Larry!! Excellent sharpness and the mono-tone works very well here! I love the vignetting, it adds a nice dimension to the shot, pulling the focus more center.

Greetings Larry,
I like the results you got with this image,to me the effect also pre dates the lighthouse, the photo appears as though it was taken many years ago.I like the sharpness & clarity of details. If you had left an individual in this scene, would it have given a good feel ,for the scale of the pier & building or not?
I also like your colour version in the WS,& noted that you would have liked to have had a cloudy sky in the scene.Hope you don't mind,I did a WS & added some blue sky & clouds, let me know what you think.Oops WS limit has been reached, will post it tomorrow.
Best Regards

Hi Larry...you are very good with Silver Efex as well as layer masking.. This shot reflects your excellent pp work. Nice job.

I saw the WS and I prefer this one , is more artistic.
Amazing perspective due to a perfect pov.
Excellent pp work here. I like this atmosphere.
The sharpness is also very good.

Hi Larry ,

Ola Larry
wonderful photo, very sharp, with a great light and contrast,a very well balanced composition, and a beautiful b/w presentation.
My best regards, mb

Hi Larry, wish I had some of the software you use , you keep bringing out some great shots. I have to agree some clouds would have added a little something extra but still a great shot.Looks a bit windy on the water. Fiona

Hi Larry, this is a well captured photo of this lighthouse with an interesting walkway.. b&w suits works well too. I'll add it to my theme, thanks..

Awesome capture and good job in creating this wonderful image especially that it is in B&W. Nice wave action which goes will with the function of the lighthouse. Good pov and dof with nice contrast. Well done, tfs.

Olá Larry

Good graphism here with excellent sharpness & tonal range. The lighthouse is well positioned on the 1/3 golden mean. Maybe a slight cw rotation as it leans to the left. I like the repetition of the lights & support 'legs' of the catwalk. Tfs!

Hi Larry,
I like your processing here, it has given the scene an atmosphere more befitting a lighthouse, rather than a sunny day.
Like you, I prefer land/seascapes to have no people, but I wonder, had you left maybe one person to indicate scale?

Beautiful and interesting construction, I like the repetition of pylons and lamps, well composed photo

Hello, the very stylish approach here turns this scene into a fine piece of graphic art.Best regards,Otto.

What a wonderful POV you have chosen to capture this scenic location, Larry!

Great focus and sharpness with amazing color tones.
The DOF is well done, and a light adds "drama" into the scene is well captured.
Great job!

Kind regards,

Very good shot and workshop and vignete.Pajo,Serbia.

Great shot Larry! Beautiful presentation taking us to another era. Well done!
TFS and have a great weekend, Lori

Many strong repetitive lines and patterns in this shot made stronger by the use of monochrome and vignetting. Nice work

The vignetting works very well here as well as your positioning of the lighthouse.
I like the effects of the waves, that appear frozen, due to your faster shutter speed.
Both a great shot and well done PP work.

Hi Larry,

This is a nice post processing work that results in a very different mood comparing to the color version. Although I still like your original image without the clouds too.
