Another shot from Friday's outing at Sunken Meadow Park. I was inspired to post this because it reminded me of a formation that would be seen at the Jones Beach Air Show today in Celebration of Memorial Day.
From Wikipedia:
Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 30 in 2011). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates men and women who died while in military service to the United States.First enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the American Civil War. It was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars. By the early 20th century, Memorial Day was an occasion for more general expressions of memory, as ordinary people visited the graves of their deceased relatives, whether they had served in the military or not.
About the air show...something Eleu would love I am sure:
Welcome to the 2011 Bethpage Federal Credit Union Air Show at Jones Beach State Park presented by Newsday. This year’s lineup will include the United States Navy's F-18 Super Hornet and the United States Airforce's A-10 Thunderbolt II, as well as some of the best military and civilian aerobatic performers performing today. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, United States Air Force has grounded its entire F-22 fleet amidst continuing concerns over the jet's On-Board Oxygen Generating System. Therefore, the F-22 Raptor will not be performing in the show this weekend.
Although the show is spectacular I gave up trying to attend years ago since typically 350 to 400,000 people flock to this Long Island south shore beach for the presentation. Often, if I am lucky, even from the north shore I get to see the amazing planes flying overhead.
About the photo...Two blackbirds were chasing this Osprey away from their nest. I looked up and started shooting, hoping I would capture them in sharp focus even though the position made it very hard for me to hold the camera steady. The osprey is holding something in its talons, and since its diet is almost exclusively fish, I hope that is what he is holding. As a vegatarian I am not terribly good about this part of nature. I would prefer it if every creature could live together in harmony and could survive on a diet of vegetables. :-) Not realistic..I know.
Cropped and sharpened. I tried a tighter crop to fill with just the birds, but then it lost the Air Show formation look, so I left more sky. Hope you like it. Have a great day!

Hello Lori,
Beautiful light, moment, very nice subject. Top!
Best regards.

IMHO, the picture could be sharper, Lori, but overall it is a delight for the eyes as you have captured a rare moment in this shot!

The color contrast between the flying birds and a blue sky, is well kept.
The POV is well done.
Thanks for sharing.

Have a nice Sunday.

Thanks and regards,

Hi Lori,
A wonderful capture with perfect timing of the small bird chasing a huge one!
A splendid composition with the perfect crop and good PP work.
Good lighting but I'm afraid sharpness is missing!
My regards,

Francis Xavier

Two for the price of one, great timing and capture. Awesome lighting. Good dof with nice details. Well done, tfs.

HA! nice work on this, wish the big bird was a little sharper, but you can't hardly control these things! I love the way they both are flying together! Nice work Lori!

Great timing on this image. Fairly nice detail considering the capture on the wing.

Hi Lori,

Well, it would have been nicer to have the Osprey sharper, but this isn't too bad. This is all about the action in the shot. This is one of the reasons I like my 300mm zoom, it's small enough to let me move around for shots like this. Anyway, you got the shot and that's what matters.

On Sunday I missed the shot of a lifetime when an immature eagle that was being chased by a smaller bird flew to about 20 feet in front of the pier I was at. Talons extended and all!! Of course, I was in a kayak and the camera was in its bag on the pier. Nothing I could do but watch :(

Hi Lori. Good shot of a difficult subject, these guys don't hang around while you make a camera adjustment, well done! Phil.

Hi Lori...nicely composed shot...excellent focus and tones.

Hi Lori
It's NOT easy to photograph birds in-flight.
You captured these 2 birds very well.
