[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A Gambel oak (quercus gambelli) perches atop a pedestal of rock in the upper Paria River Canyon of southern Utah.

The Gambel oak is a welcome source of shelter from the hot sun for backbackers and other wild critters of the desert. In arid regions its presence always indicates higher than normal ground moisture. This particular tree or shrub must have taken root at a time when the canyon floor was higher, providing easier access to ground water. Now it enjoys a protected position above raging flash flood waters and trampling cattle.

Gambel oaks are one of my favorite photo subjects, and I will be creating a theme for them once I have a few more posted.

Updated image is a rescan with my newer, better scanner (Epson 4870) and more enlightened color balancing for cleaner, more accurate colors (on my monitor, anyway). It also benefits from a larger file size. Hope you like it! -Don

Great photo, I love seeing trees or anything rowing out of rock and this rock is beautiful by itself. The cracks probably coming from the roots of the oak. Great color, composition and detail. Thanks for the info on the Gambel Oak. It also reminds me of Bonsai in a planter

This was an excellent shot Don. Beautifully sharp with strong saturation and perfect exposure, extremely crisp and detailed.
