In Sumter, South Carolina, there is a wonderful botanical garden and lake, and I spent a day or two there taking photos. It was early yet for the iris to bloom, but a few were making themselves seen. This is another thing I love about photography - light and shadow work. (and square format) The sun was having a hard time making it through the bald cyprus trees around the lake, but I caught this bloom peeking through.

Here is some info on the gardens.

The beautiful black waters of Swan Lake form the setting for the spectacular Iris Gardens. The lake is dotted with colorful islands, and wildlife is abundant. The only public park in the United States to feature all eight swan species, Swan Lake-Iris Gardens is also home to some of the nation's most intensive plantings of Japanese iris, which bloom yearly in mid to late May and last until the beginning of June. The garden also boasts many other floral attractions, including colorful camellias, azaleas, day lilies, and Japanese magnolias. A Braille Trail enables the sight-impaired to enjoy the scents and sensations of the gardens.

Swan Lake-Iris Gardens began in 1927 as a private fishing retreat for Hamilton Carr Bland, a local businessman. At the same time he was developing the 30 acres of swamp on what is now West Liberty Street, he was landscaping the grounds of his home with Japanese iris. They failed miserably, and after consulting expert horticulturists from as far away as New York, he ordered his gardener to dig up the bulbs and dump them at the swamp. The following spring, they burst into bloom. The accidental garden, referred to by Southern Living magazine a "lovely mistake," has since been developed into one of the finest botanical gardens in the United States.

Excellent beauty! Now I know what you mean. Thank you Shelly for your kind and inspiring words of wisdom.

Hi Shelly,
What a beautiful bloom! Amazing point of view with awesome colors and incredible fine details. Love it.

Best regards,

That's nice Shelly, the colour of the leaves and blooms is just right, sharp with a lot of detail.

Magnificent light here Shelly,
expert crop and placement of the flower in the frame.
Wonderful dark mood to the shot.
Great work.

Hello Shelly,
A lovely close-up of this delicate flower!
The colour reproduction is very well done by help of fine light, and the petals have sharp fine details...
A well composed presentation and an attractive image, would probably work with an even more narrow DoF..!

Hi Shelly,
Wonderful spring time capture of this delicate iris. The vivid blue contrast beautifully with the lush green blades. Brilliant clear colors to this lovely macro.

Hello Shelly. Excellent shot of violet against green under beautiful warm lighting. I like the texture and sharpness of this gorgeous flower against the pleasant busyness of green leaves. Stunning perspective very well captured. Best regards and have a nice day. Jusni

Hi Shelly

Lovely composition with the delicate flower against the strong leaves. Nicely focused and beautifully composed

Comme c'est joli cette lumière qui rend translucide les herbes et les pétales.
J'aime beaucoup cette photographie,
sur tous les plans.

Lovely colours and a really great composition - the curves and colours of the single flower contrast so well with the almost geometic lines of the leaves. Well spotted and well taken.
Thanks for sharing
