*****************************

A small butterfly with a wingspan of 22-35 mm and a long tail on the hindwing. The upperside ground colour of the male is mauve-blue, with a thin black border along the outer margin and two black ocelli at the hind angle of the hindwing. The underside ground colour is light brown, with a white band in the postdiscal area and light-coloured wavy lines parallel with the outer margin, which give a characteristic pattern. On the hindwing, two ocelli at the base of the black tail are enhanced with an orange surround and silver highlights. The upperside ground colour of the female is brown with sky blue highlights. On the hindwing there is a series of dark marks, outlined with white, in the submarginal area. Two of these marks, at the base of the tail, are black and more pronounced. The underside is similar to that of the male.

A butterfly with a very wide range, found in all areas of the world with a temperate climate. It is a known migrant species, which colonizes northern areas every year from the Mediterranean countries.

In Cyprus it is on the wing from March until November in successive, overlapping broods. Also recorded in very small numbers during the winter. The larval host-plants are various species of the Leguminosae family. The larvae feed on the contents of the young seedpods, often invading various crops such as black-eye beans and broad beans. It is also observed in large numbers ovipositing on Medicago sativa (Lucerne).

A very common species, distributed throughout Cyprus. It inhabits a wide variety of habitat and has been recorded in phrygana, garigue, maquis, forest glades, river valleys, agricultural land and gardens from sea level to the summit of Troodos. Recorded in very large numbers, especially during summer and autumn, close to crops such as Lucerne, Black-eye Beans and Broad Beans.
