The power of sand
|[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note|
|I went for another walk in the desert early this morning and thought about the patterns in the surface rocks which I have noticed in many other locations where the rock is exposed. It is noticable that the wear pattern lines in the rock in Bahrain are always in exactly the same direction. I checked out the orientation of the lines in the rock surface and they are in the NNW/SSE orientation. I quick look on the internet to look at prevailing winds in Bahrain reveals that for 70% of the year the wind blows from the NNW, usually strong enough to start blowing the sand around. It seems a reasonable conclusion that the wera pattern in the rock are caused by sand erosion. The photo was taken facing SSE, i.e. with my back to the wind. Desaturated, contrast increased to show the wear patterns better and resized for upload.|
