Industrial archeology again Folks!

New Mills

New Mills is situated on the borders of North West Derbyshire and Cheshire and is part of the Derbyshire Peak District. A small town, it traces its history back to the 13th century when a corn mill was established. Later in the 18th century, the Lancashire Cotton Industry found the conditions at New Mills ideal for cotton production, building more water-powered mills and resulting in increased prosperity for the district. A total of 5 new mills were built around the Torrs, a small, but nevertheless impressive, natural sandstone gorge running through the centre of the town, at the confluence of two rivers, the Sett and the Goyt.

The Cotton spinning industry ceased in the Torrs in the early 1900s. buildings fell into disrepair and the area became overgrown. During the late 20th century the 'The Torrs Riverside Park' - 'the park under the town' - came into being to provide a place for recreation and relaxation, and the New Mills Heritage Centre was opened to promote tourism. The Torrs Millennium Walkway a much admired bridge is set deep in the gorge and attracts many visitors. (Pictures to follow)

The light was very poor on the day I took this, so I make no apologies, but say that I have applied more than my customary small amount of adjustment to the picture. I hope that it doesn't show too much!

Bill,
This certainly looks like an interesting place - not least for photography!
I particulrly like the way the structure in the background - perhaps a viaduct - looms, half seen, in the trees.
Regards
colin

Lovely setting great picture but a little over exposed. Is that a cliff face or a big bridge in the background as it looks like an arch. A truly beautiful place
Codge

Hi Bill,
This is a lovely picture, I dont think you have over done your adjustments at all. There are great colours and I love the reflections in the water.
Looks a fantastic place for photography.

Hello Bill,
Well done! I know this location well, and I think you have captured beautifully those elements which make it such a fascinating place. Cliff, rock, stone, ruination, the dominance of nature, and that water! A smashing photo, Bill.
Best wishes
Ray

Hi Bill,
This is a great picture, nice sharpness and details from a good POV, I like the reflections in the water, the only thing I would change here is just to straighten the picture as it leans to the left slightly.
Well done
Regards Andy

Cool place Bill... Lovely shot with amazing reflections...
Places like this make me feel so much at home in the UK... it's a funny feeling. Being at home in a country where you have only been just a few short visits.... ;-)

Can't help it.. it's just the way I feel
Great capture!

Cheers,
Anneke

Wow Bill! I love this shot of the ruins. the extent of detail is simply amazing and almost mystical. This reminds me of the jigsaw puzzles that my mom does - so filled with details. One can't apologize for the weather, that is what creates the challenge. This is definitely a place worth visiting.
Cheers,
Dianne

Hi Bill,

Hi Bill,I like your composition, you have captured the feeling of time gone by with those ruins.I wonder how much of a drop there is for the river to tumble down too.Is that a hint of a much larger bridge & also a cliff wall just through the trees?
Nice green reflections + those of the grasses &trees.

Ron

Hi Bill,

I love industrial arcitecture! Very few could build like the victorians. This is amazing the reflections are perfect and the subject is brilliant.

The "more than customary adjustment" does not show at all, it looks great considering the light was so bad.

Cheers
Tom

Hello Bill,
I really like your composition with the semi derelict buildings alongside the natural vegetation. The bridge is perfectly placed.
The reflections are beautiful. You managed the light particularly well, your 'adjustments' have enhanced the picture.
We used to drive quite close to New Mills but I was never aware of this place.
