He was always the «first of the gang…» (*) with a tool on his hand, and he worked the stone has God in the «days of the beginning».

His name is Hiroyuki Asano and he came from Japan to participate in «THE SIMPPETRA - International Symposium of Sculpture in Stone - of Caldas da Rainha» that happens in this city, every two years since 1986, during 30 days in the summer.

In all editions «The Simppetra» receives near 100 projects competitors (the great majority of foreigners), of which only five are approved — the sixth participant is always an invited Portuguese sculptor — to work more than 70 tons of stone for symposium.

Kovanic, a sculptor from Paris (France), said about the stone used that "…this rock marble is superb, and the people will be able to touch, to sit down, or to settle in it as birds".

This is a 2nd piece of a triptych with the intent of to share with my TL friends a little part of the universe behind my photos.

Hope you enjoy this «first of the gang...» Click here

Hi Jose,
At the first sight, I believed that you photographed a skateboarder! :) This man seems physically too tiny for carving the marble!
I like the pose you captured with the gloves hiding his face! A good symbol of an artist an his hard work behind his artwork! Excellent colors and management of light! Bravo! Annie

Boa noite Jose
Man history is long one and hands are so important.
His hands are controled with the mind. Hidden the face and express the world by hands. Love the colours, the light and all the moments of creation.
This is great event and a great moment to feel how art and life are so close.
There are somethings free in life.
My regards

Olá José,
Você deve conhecer o belo poema de Carlos Drumond de Andrade, E agora José?
Foi o que me veio à memória ao ver essas mãos excelentemente capturadas:

"E agora, José?

A festa acabou,

a luz apagou,

o povo sumiu,

a noite esfriou,

e agora, José ?

e agora, você ?

você que é sem nome,

que zomba dos outros,

você que faz versos,

que ama protesta,

e agora, José ?

Hi jose

A superb shot of the sculptor with good use of a shallow dof & excllent colour and lighting. Unusual portrait, focussing on the hands that create, & not the face. Tfs!

Ciao Jose

Um interessante documentário, finos detalhes!
Eu gosto do ArtWork e das cores,
uma bonita definição da imagem,
Gosto da composição equilibrada,
acentuado em detalhes o tema principal
com cores frescas ...

Hi Jose
I like the way you took this.
No doubt not wanting his face photographed you made him use his tools which are his hands. He is obviously a left hander as the glove is really worn out compared to the one on the left (which is his right). It tells a story.

Ola José.
Looking to these hands, I am motivated by my fantasy to believe that there are parallels between them, and the face. It must not be, but can be. There is a lot of latent significance in this capture.
Very good.

Hi Jose!

Bom dia Jose,

bonita imagem, uma forte expressão. I am trying to find the best words to describe how I feel about this image...

* beautiful
* unconventional
* so different
* so original

* so symbolic.

I love it. Bem capturada esta cena. Cores e contrastes excelentes. Bela escolha de composição, uma imagem muito artística.

Um abraço,

Bonjour José
Impressive shot with good back light
A japanese, yes, a hand worker sure , maybe shy, but nothing could have induced me in thinking he was a great sculptor.However "l'habit ne fait pas le moine" as we say in french (- the dress does not make the monk- )
Thank you , besides, for your note which led me to know "the Simppetra" and seek more yet through internet.
Regards and Have a nice day

Ola Jose:

Hi Jose, A fine story with this photo. It is always amazing to see the skill of the artisans in carving sculptures from hard stone. The mystery of the hands in front of the face makes this intriging. Good work and happy easter from Sydney. Murray.

Dear Jose,

Extremely interesting image fullfiled with always interesting to read NOTE. Great work!

Have a nice day!

Hi Jose
Except the philosophy behind this shot and the mood you were looking for, the composition, lighting, and clarity are not as I expect.
As you are a great photographer, I tried to be honest...
Best Regards, Alireza ;)

An excellent composition to celebrate the occasion. Those summer festivals are a good opportunity for people to travel and mix. The portrait is excellently captured and framed

hi Jose

Interesting story about the gang with your presentation of this sculptor hidden away by his hands.

tfs, bill

Nice details and great work!Wonderful shot my friend.
Um abraço,

Olá José,

Um trabalho diferente mas nem por isso menos interessante e belo.
Muito bem fotografadas as mãos do garoto e soberba iluminação.
Parabéns e um grande abraço,
