[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Prior to the volcanic eruption in 1957 this lighthouse was positioned on the most westerly point of the Island of Faial. Today about two kilometers of land lies west of it. The lighthouse was partially destroyed during the eruption. Nowadays the first floor is still covered in ashes. An interpretative center has been build underground in front of the lighthouse. The tower has been restored and can be visited.

I made this photo shortly after I have made a fall down the cliffs. I was still shocked and in a little pain. I used a flashlight to illuminate the lighthouse. I could not open the shutter too long (only 109 sec) as there was a lot of spray from the sea covering up the lens with little droplets. It also felt as if the wind was moving the camera.

Only the following morning did I noticed that during my fall, my tripod head got damaged hence the feel of the movement.

Hi Niek,
We do sometimes put ourselves into strange or dangerous situations to get the shot. Great cool blue with a mysterious appeal. The low angle powerfully portrays the grandeur and importance of the lighthouse.

Hello Nick,
A very interesting phenomenon and, I am sure, a very special experience for you despite the unpleasant tumble. For me, the image is too dark and could have done with more exposure. However, the total product is deserving of my two points.

Hello Niek, despite the fall you still managed a rather special picture.
The light from your flashlight gives us enough detail, especially set against the night sky.
Have you any shots of the lighthouse in daylight?
Tfs, regards Jean.

Hi Niek,
Very delicate lighting, I like the use of the blue hour.
Nice silhouette of the lighthouse.
Well done,

Francis Xavier
